Job overview

  • In the beginning of 2020, I started working at TPS, I began as a labourer helping with simple duties involving mowing, brush cutting, chainsaw use, planting and other general landscaping services.
  • Within 3 months at the age of 19 I became a team leader; I was responsible for driving a vehicle with a trailer and completing jobs throughout South-east Queensland.
  • Day to day tasks involve management of plant health and diseases, large scale cutbacks and tree removal, mowing, herbicide and insecticide use, minor carpentry maintenance in childcare centres, hedging and manicuring of gardens and many other hands-on tasks.
  • I was also responsible for organising my own team’ scheduling and took responsibility of client relations involving providing quotes for future residential accounts.
  • As a supervisor, I am tasked with scheduling weekly jobs, the acquirement of materials needed for the range of jobs and organising and managing all other staff and tasks on each site.
  • I manage client relations, complaints, and quotes with commercial maintenance officers, and I am responsible for the safety of all staff working with me on each site.
  • I have managed this role while I have been studying fulltime at university, managing both full time university and working in this role has developed my organisational skills and management.
  • My time at TPS has provided me an insight into the management roles in the landscaping and commercial maintenance industry. It has broadened my expertise on managing quotes, material use, and task management.

Job overview

  • In the time after I differed my environmental management course, I began working full-time at AEL to obtain real world experience in the environmental industry.
  • In my time at AEL I predominately worked in environmental regeneration and where help was needed, I would help the landscaping department.
  • The environmental regeneration work involved large scale removal of noxious weeds in open bushland, particularly required as environmental offset for large civil company projects.
  • The tasks I was involved with was the use of herbicides to remove weeds and invasive species through acres of bushland at times.
  • I developed skills in plant identification and ethical spraying methods that did not harm surrounding ecological processes.
  • When I was not spraying, I was doing large scale planting.
  • On an average day I would be planting upwards of 1000+ tube stock daily in the large civil areas.
  • Whilst working for AEL I was required to read planting plans and exercise minor leadership of other staff; here I discovered my interest in landscape architecture and months later I decided to transfer landscape architecture at QUT.

  • After my graduation from school, I worked for 3 months in Goondiwindi irrigating cotton fields
  • At the time I was only 17 and within 2 weeks I was required to drive my own vehicle around my designated area within the property as a team leader
  • I was tasked with managing the watering of crops, the area I managed was a total of 3000 acres of irrigated cotton
  • The task was not easy due to my lack of prior knowledge in the industry with also minimal experience in team management
  • Despite this, I worked upwards of 70-hour weeks for 3 months and in that time gained lots of skills and knowledge regarding agriculture and the operation of large machinery such as tractors, excavators, etc

  • I worked for SWC constructions prior to starting at AEL
  • I was the only labourer for the construction company, so I was required predominately in landscaping but also in all general labour tasks such as waste removal and demolition

  • Agricultural chemical distribution control license (ACDC) (2019): I completed my agricultural chemical distribution control (ACDC)/ commercial operators’ license in my time at AEL. It is a requirement for operators for commercial and public sites where herbicides and insecticides are being used. The licence also allows the transport of chemicals in my own vehicle
  • White card (2018):I have completed my White Card safe practices course, which allows me to work on most construction sites.
  • Blue card (2020): Whilst working at TPS I have been required to obtain a blue card as a select number of the accounts are childcare centres and a children’s hospice centre.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination (2021): I have been double dose vaccinated. All TPS workers have been due to accounts in aged care.
  • Car/Motorbike licence: I have my opens driver licence and my restricted motorbike licence
