Key Civil Engineering Projects

  • Finite Element Assessment of a Masonry Structure, To investigate the in-plane behavior of intact and cracked URM walls using a detailed finite element model., Conducting a literature review of the structural performance of unreinforced masonry walls and identifying the research gap., Designing of masonry wall using Abaqus and performing three different tests (Shear test, Axial Compression test and diagonal test) to collect the value of maximum/minimum stress and strain acting on the point load of the wall concerning the given direction of load., Research methodology was developed, such as the process description in which Cohesive surface-based behavior is used in the simulation of compression, shear, and diagonal in-plane test models. Traction separation behaviour is used for modelling mortar joints. Necessary parametric studies are performed to replicate the behaviour of cracked walls, research hypothesis, three different tests, and numerical/experimental data derived from the literature review were used to design a numerical model in Abaqus., Validation of all three test setups- Axial compression test, shear test, and Diagonal test with the experiment performed by Mr. Hamid Ali to do further parametric studies. Suggestion on improving the bond was given., The investigation on the in-plane performance of intact URM walls and those with pre-existing damage is performed by modelling a simplified micro model and with this a numerical model for the axial compression test, diagonal test and the shear test was developed without much difficulty. The value of stress and strain from a numerical model were validated with the experimental data, and both the figures were compared using a line graph. The graph showed only a little difference. A similar study can be done for the grouted specimens to check the behaviour of masonry walls in similar conditions or based on such cracking failures, reinforcement of masonry walls, or methods for strengthening. Mortar joints were investigated by adding numerical values of ad-mixtures which increased the strength of joints and resulted into less cracks.
  • Design of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant, To design a water supply, its network of distribution and the wastewater treatment plant using the EPANET to design the distribution of pipes and MS Excel for calculations., Analyzing the general layout of a water treatment plant using Autocad with data such as population, water intake per capita, rainfall rate, and number of houses available online., Designing the layout for the Banana Shire area of Central Queensland, Australia based on Capricorn Municipal Development Guidelines using Autocad, by keeping the other available layouts on their website., Calculating the water demand using MS Excel equation feature to design a reservoir capacity., Designing the main components of the water treatment plant including the intake reservoir, the sedimentation and the filtration tank using EPANET., Conducting the design of the distribution system of water for the population using EPANET. Water demand at each node was calculated using the CMDG water usage data., Formulating the design of the wastewater collection system including a gravity sewer system using PVC pipes of 150mm to collect the wastewater from all the public channel networks which have to be treated later., Designing the wastewater treatment plant in two parts including wastewater treatment and sludge treatment. Wastewater treatment was divided into four categories which included preliminary wastewater treatment, primary wastewater treatment, secondary wastewater treatment and territory wastewater treatment., Designing the sludge treatment system which was divided into three parts including the sludge digestion phase, sludge thinking and sludge dewatering, in which heat was produced and a few amount of bacteria for anaerobic digestion of the sludge, later it was moved to the pressure chamber with high pressure and then into the sludge discharge., The design of the water supply as well as its network of circulation along with the maintenance of the wastewater was completed by allocating the pipelines in a systematic manner using EPANET.
