Work History
Dive Instructor/Deckhand
True Blue Sailing
Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia
01.2024 - 11.2024
Since the beginning of last year, I was working on two charter boats in the Whitsunday Islands, based out of Airlie Beach in Queensland, Australia. I was initially hired as a dive instructor. I also took on deckhand roles as I progressed before getting promoted to first mate. Our boats take 32 and 54 guests out for two-night trips around the Whitsundays and include diving, snorkelling, beach visits, and a number of onboard games and activities. I have gained valuable experience in Dive Instructing, having to brief, manage, and be responsible for up to 8 divers underwater at a time. Another valuable skill from this job is public speaking, as on each trip, I address the entire boat on matters of safety, instruction, eco-tourism, and game shows. I have gained culinary experience from preparing and serving up to 54 passengers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The boat is BYO, meaning there are always intoxicated passengers who create challenges, which has improved my customer management skills. The job also includes boat maintenance and cleaning, which I have proven to be an asset in because of my previous trade experience. Being the first mate comes with the responsibility of managing the crew and passengers, ensuring the correct safety provisions and customer satisfaction. I promoted environmental stewardship among students by teaching responsible diving practices and emphasizing marine conservation efforts during dives.
Teacher Aide
09.2022 - 12.2023
For over a year, I worked as a Teacher Aide at a school for people with intellectual disabilities. Student safety was always prioritised, with many challenges occurring due to the numerous behaviours and needs of the students. The job required patience and compassion, though the most important skill was the ability to connect with and befriend the students in order to improve their quality of life. We educated our students based on their individual abilities, particularly with life skills (such as supermarket shopping for the more abled). We also taught our students healthy eating habits and numerous ways to exercise. I formed many friendships with both staff and students throughout my time here.
Landscaping/Labouring
06.2022 - 02.2023
Last summer, I found a couple on a student job search that was looking for some work done in their garden. Originally, they were only advertising a few days of work cleaning and staining their garden shed. However, after they saw how hard I worked and the finished product I produced, they hired me for the rest of the summer. Ultimately, I painted multiple fences for them and cleared out many trees from their large section, amongst other gardening and labouring duties.
Fundraiser
IHC
07.2022 - 09.2022
For a few months, I worked as a fundraiser for IHC. It was essentially doorknocking around the entire Dunedin area. While it can be tedious, it taught me to deal with rejection and improved my communication skills. I learnt a lot about people with intellectual disabilities and how to improve their quality of life. I have spoken to countless people who have people in their families who have intellectual disabilities and aren’t getting the support that they deserve. This has inspired me to help people with intellectual disabilities more directly.
Carer
06.2022 - 07.2022
This job entailed looking after a man who suffered from cerebral palsy. I would escort him to meetings and social events, exercise him at the gym and public pool, and help him complete everyday hygiene tasks such as showering and using the bathroom. His cerebral palsy was quite severe, meaning he was restricted to a wheelchair. Despite this, he founded his own charity that enabled people with similar conditions around New Zealand to access the support they require. I helped him in almost every aspect of his life and learned a lot from his optimistic outlook.
Traffic Control
01.2020 - 01.2022
During my time as a Labourer, there were periods of time when I would be required to work traffic control.
Labourer
01.2020 - 01.2022
For two years, during the holidays of my studies, I worked as a Labourer and hammer hand on both commercial and residential construction sites. I gathered a comprehensive understanding of the workings of a construction site, including all of the safety procedures. This job improved my work ethic and stamina as it was 48-hour weeks of strenuous, labour-intensive work. I became well-practised with power tools and honed my ability to build and repair.
Delivery Driver
Hell Pizza
Wellington
01.2019 - 01.2020
In my last year of high school, I worked 15 hours a week at Hell Pizza as a delivery driver. For most of this job, I was unsupervised as I would be driving pizzas to all parts of Wellington for most of my shift. This taught me how to work independently in the workplace as well as great time management skills. In the first few weeks that I worked here, I was given a raise because the owner received an email from an elderly customer telling her of how I offered to help her put away her groceries. I continued to get raises throughout my time at Hell Pizza because of my hard work and customer service skills.
Delivery Easy Driver
01.2018 - 01.2018
This job taught me skills similar to those I learned at Hell Pizza: customer service, time management, and independent work. I only worked here for a short time because they paid only commission, with no base rate, which meant I would be underpaid for some nights. However, that negative aspect of the job had an upside in that it encouraged me to work harder and improved my work ethic.
Call Centre
Curia Market Research
01.2018 - 01.2018
I was employed at Curia Market Research where I conducted political surveys. This required a lot of patience as there were often significant language and communication barriers to overcome while carrying out the surveys. Here I learnt how to communicate with clients effectively and how to be patient in doing so.
Kitchen Hand
Irwell Rest Home
01.2017 - 01.2018
I worked at Irwell Rest Home as a kitchen hand, usually in the evenings after school and occasionally during the day on weekends. As it was just a small kitchen, my job entailed more than just washing dishes. I often helped the nurses with the residents of the home, and I ended up befriending many of them. This job required a great deal of respect and patience.
