While studying at university has provided me with valuable knowledge through researching topics within my chosen field, it has also given me experiences and useful skills that I can use within industry work.


Field experience

  • Ecological surveys, conducting transect and quadrant sampling - surveying vertebrates (birds, mammals), invertebrates (crabs, spiders), vegetation
  • Plant identification (South-East Queensland) - Measuring plant traits and soil sampling
  • Mammal surveys - during spotlighting and nature walks; Small Animal handling using Elliot traps and cages
  • Bird surveys and Bird Identification
  • Camera trap image sorting

Industry Skills

  • Report planning and writing - Analysing data obtained on the field - Working in a team on projects
  • Conservation practices in Queensland and Australia - Identifying threatened species
  • Knowledge of flora and fauna in Queensland and Australia
  • Knowledge of Queensland Environmental Policy and Legislation
  • Statistical programming in R
  • Effectively communicating and working with people from all different walks of life. I put these skills into practice during my semester abroad in Montreal, Canada.

Volunteer at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary [Active Participant]


Worker on the Small Mammals Round

(Species include: Echidnas, Greater Gliders, Sugar Gliders, Bilbies, Possums and Geese.)

  • safely handling and tending to small mammals. Feeding and caring for wildlife.
  • Working alongside animals whilst cleaning and refurbishing enclosures
  • Liaising with guests at the park
  • Contributing to laborious tasks in the outdoors
