Alana Bellamy

After completing my EENs in 2013 I began permanent employment at Lake Macquarie Private hospital in June, where I have worked on the Medical and Surgical Cardiothoracic ward for the past 10 years.

In this role as an EEN I have done tasks such as:

• Administered medications via oral, IV, and intramuscular injections and monitored responses.
• Cardiothoracic trained in CPR and post cardiac arrest care and monitoring.
• Monitored patient condition by interpreting and tracking ECG readings, identifying irregular telemetry readings and updating team members on changes in stability.
• Managed quality care for patients with heart failure and coronary artery disease.
• Checked patient vitals such as temperature, blood pressure ( Manual and automatic), SPO2 and HR, and blood sugar levels.
• Maintained quality care and comfort for patients with heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and other conditions.
• Performed routine wound care for patients post surgery and dressing changes on patients with chronic wounds or skin tears.
• Remained calm during a high-stress and critical situations, demonstrating sustained focus and problem solving in real time.
• Collaborated with doctors to quickly assess patients and deliver appropriate treatment while managing rapidly changing conditions.
• Updated patient charts with data such as medications and vital signs to keep records current and support accurate treatments.
• Assessed patients to determine individual needs and develop care plans in coordination with other healthcare professionals.
• Reviewed clinical documents to verify accuracy for the right patient.
• Answered call buzzers and supported patient comfort and needs.
• Prepared and sanitized rooms before assisting doctors with minor medical procedures.
• Educated patients, families and caregivers on diagnosis and prognosis, treatment options, disease process, and management and lifestyle options.

While continuing to build new skills and knowledge I have also maintained my skills & training from my previous employment & experiences

After completing my AINs I started working at Water view aged care in Teralba, while studying my EENs between 2011 and 2013 at Tighes Hill TAFE, Newcastle

Some of the tasks I carried out and skills I learnt include:

• Checked residents vitals such as temperature, blood pressure, blood sugar levels & documenting into the appropriate resident files and systems
• Answered call buzzers & supported residents with comfort and safety by adjusting bed rails and equipment.
• Assisted with feeding & monitored intake to help residents achieve nutritional objectives.
• Assisted residents with effectively managing routine bathing, grooming, and other hygiene needs.
• Reported unusual or urgent circumstances in residents condition immediately to nurse supervisor.
• Engaged in housekeeping tasks by replacing linen, cleaning & sanitizing patient rooms.
• Identified & reported unsafe situations to maintain safety protocols. Observed & examined residents that require medical attention.
• Assisted nursing staff with completing daily rounds.
• Completed activities of daily living for residents unable to self-care, and assisted those with limited mobility in completing tasks.

I started my nursing career at Maitland Public hospital on a school based traineeship to complete my AINs, while finishing my HSC between 2009 and 2011 at Maitland high school.

I worked on the rehabilitation ward every Friday at Maitland Public Hospital for the practical component of my AIN training in acute care which I completed in October of 2011.
