Work History

Senior Data and Investigation Analyst- Data & Insights Branch, Research, Evaluation & Data Division (DVA)

Department of Veterans’ Affairs
  • My current role in the Data Matching team include producing weekly and monthly performance reporting for External departmental clients and the Client Benefits Division in conjunction with key Income Support (IS) stakeholders using the agreed templates in an accurate and timely manner. I currently utilise a range of DVA Data tools such as Teradata, SAS EG, Tableau and Microsoft Power BI. I collaborate within the broader team as well as with key partners such as Data and Insights Branch, and other Quality Assurance (QA) business areas, to improve the accuracy and comprehensiveness within dashboards for Tableau. I also analyse service delivery effectiveness for Debt Management and Aged Care, via performance reporting and analysis. I also assist with requests for input as required for responses to ANAO and Internal Audit requests, Senate Estimates Briefs and Commission Submissions.

Graduate Accountant – Financial Reporting Section

Department of Veterans’ Affairs
  • In my role in the Finance Section, as part of a team I was tasked with completing end of period financial reports and preparing monthly financial statements which incorporate financial transactions of the various sections within the DVA.
  • The DVA aims for best practice in financial statement preparation ensuring that it complies with its reporting obligations and continues to provide sound financial accounting advice. My role was to provide functional data correction and oversight to ensure compliance and correctness in reporting. I performed end of period adjustments, sampling and data correction, reporting and financial statement preparation from primary accounting software reports such as DOLARS.
  • My role included determining the correct accounting treatment and financial implications of new, or changes to existing, business activities. I had to determine the appropriate recording, management and accounting treatment of assets and had to tailor administered financial information relevant to the prescribed reporting requirements.

Client Service Officer (Graduate Program) – Pharmacy Programs and Operations

Department of Veterans’ Affairs
  • In my role as a client service officer, I would meet with clients (usually current serving ADF personnel) and provide advice to them about the application and administration of the law in regard to their benefit entitlements. Administration of these entitlements included registration for benefits, informing and educating them as to their entitlements, informing them of their obligations, informing them of processes and procedures to achieve the best outcomes.
  • As part of a team, my role included helping to make the administration of the law as client friendly and as seamless as possible. In meetings with clients, I would provide demonstrations of DVA client websites, portals and apps. I would provide advice as to how best to make applications, what information was required and details of how applications are processed. My role as a client service officer was to make compliance with the law as easy as possible for the benefit of the client and for the proper administration of the law.

Commemorations Experience

Department of Veterans’ Affairs
  • For my third rotation, I was placed in the Community Engagement Team within the Commemorations Branch of DVA. This role allowed me to be involved in the planning of promotional events for Remembrance Day and other significant DVA calendar events. These events required material preparation and presenting to internal and external clients. I also had creative input in regard to the marketing of the ANZAC portal website. Another important event I had extensive control over was the Female Veterans and Veterans' Families Forum for which I received overwhelming positive feedback from our clients. This involved catering and digital presentation.
  • In my role in the Commemorations Team in the DVA I was tasked with providing technical advice to my director on the GST implications of funding provided through a certain publicly funded commemoration scheme. The issues revolved around whether the payments to the States were GST exempt. Because the funds were not provided under a Supply Bill through Parliament, the issue revolved on the facts. The ATO website provided good guidance on issues and various GST rulings which touched on the matter. I found that certain practices put in place by the DVA and State departments accessing the grants had been previously incorrect. Advice was sought from a private legal firm to confirm our position. I worked with my director to develop strategies for moving forward and together we met with State representatives to discuss the issues and resolved both past issues and the way forward.
