For the past six years I have been the Clinical Midwife Specialist 2 , Parenting Education for John Hunter Hospital, relieving Clinical Midwife Consultant when required in the last 4 years. I have a passion for enhancing the maternity health care experience for women and families through education and supporting a parenting education service that provides relevant evidenced based resources to meet the needs and improve social determinants for women and families accessing the service. Through effective leadership, developing relationships and management roles, I have a proven to foster open communication and collaborative relationships with stakeholders and develop practices to enhance the health care experience for staff, women and families. This diverse role has two key responsibilities – 

Management  of the Parenting Education Service, John Hunter Hospital 

  • Managing a small core team and a larger team of 24 Sessional Parenting Educators.
  • Responsibilities include, utilising the excellence framework, staff management, WH&S and meeting the educational needs of maternity inpatients
  • Participate in quality improvement activities to improve service provision, health outcomes and the client experience

Consultancy and leadership, Parenting Education at JHH and across HNELHD 13 maternity sites. 

  • Maintain the provision of quality, responsive and client-centred parenting education in hospital and community settings
  • Create, develop and lead innovative models of parenting education programs, including curriculum, lesson planning development
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate professional development programs related to leading Parenting Education groups for Midwives and other Health care professionals across HNELHD
  • Support Maternity Units across HNELHD to implement and maintain parenting education programs

  • Developing expert clinical and management skills in all facets of a woman's pregnancy and birth journey, which included education, sensitivity, confidentiality and co ordination of multi disciplinary teams to provide pregnancy and birth care.
  • Working as a clinical expert, team leader and mentor, sharing knowledge to all staff.



ACHIEVEMENTS

Quality Improvement

2023: Review of MOMS and Parenting Education antenatal referral process. Lead for review collaborating with multicultural health officer, midwives in ANC to review and develop an efficient referral pathway to both services. MOMS program no longer exists in its current format. Building on current referral process for ease of referral.

Projects - 2017 : Parenting Education - A Service Reset. Team member

An Essentials of Care multi-pronged project, aimed at increasing client engagement and reinvigorating the Parenting Education Service.  The project involved: - Development of a short film on Parenting Education Services,  Introduction a new education program- CalmBirth, Redevelopment of HNELHD 'Having a Baby' consumer webpages  Utilisation of the HNELHD social media platforms Development of an online Virtual Tour of the JHH Maternity Service. 

2017 Project  Lead, Antenatal care-shifting the focus. Implementing a service change to the way antenatal care is delivered to women. Using transitional research to sustain the change and improve outcomes for women and babies.

National Standard 2

Consumers: actively engage in Consumer Recruitment and onboarding. Review current and future consumer publications

Liaising with stakeholders to maintain and  make maternity webpages specific to each maternity site.,

Governance

Development and review District wide guidelines.

Risk management: Utilisation of QARS, QIDS  and IMMS  to identify gaps, Service non-compliance and instigate measures to address issues. For example patient falls, third and fourth degree tears, infant safe sleeping.   Use of MAM's, bi-monthly team meetings, PDR's and professional development activities for staff.

Collaborated with NSW e health to review TEAMS platform as a tool for delivering birth and parenting education

Educational

COVID - 19 Pandemic. Member of the team for the introduction of online Parenting Education Programs three days after lockdown

Certified CAPEA Educator and  working towards trainer certification. 

Conference committee member for the National Parenting Education Conference, delivered over  2.5 days via a hybrid virtual model during COVID lockdown.  

Facilitate regular staff in-service's communicating and educating on practice change and what tools the service has to support women and families with pregnancy and birth outcomes.
