Summary

After leaving the British Army and retraining as a carpenter, i have worked my way from Apprentice to General Manager, where I have achieved many milestones and awards along the way.

In 2021 and after a number of years in senior management, i reflected on my most enjoyable time in my construction career and where I had a better work life balance for my family.

That time was as a Construction Supervisor, since that time, I have been estimating and supervising, complex construction repairs to commercial and residential buildings such as major renovations caused by fire, flood, impact or builder insolvency.

After 10 years in insurance building repairs, I have decided to change industries for a fresh mind set and a new challenge.

Work History

Major Works Construction Supervisor

Current Employer
08.2023 - Current
  • My current role is to quote and win major construction projects and supervise the projects from inception to completion.
  • The construction projects I deal with are high value projects such as repair/rebuild commercial buildings, residential buildings and strata high rises.
  • The type of projects I regularly work on are renovations to high rise buildings due to major flooding through a number of floors, Re-building of commercial units after fire damage, rebuilding residential properties after either full house fires, vehicle impact or major flooding and finishing off new build construction after builder insolvency.
  • Finishing building after builder insolvency normally requires extensive investigations to ensure the owner receives the product they have paid for and to ensure any works by the previous builder was completed correctly.

Operations Manager

Barclays Building Services
01.2023 - 08.2023
  • After leaving Bay Building to get ready for surgery, Barclays heard I had left and came to my home.
  • Since I left in 2018, the business had been in steady decline.
  • Barclays asked if I could come back to the business and spend a couple of weeks before surgery reviewing the business, its process, new software implementation and provide a plan, so they could recover the business while I was in recovery, with a view to me stay with the business after surgery.
  • When returning to work in May 2023, I had cancelled the software upgrade as it did not suite our purpose and employed another, retrained all the staff, interviewed all staff as individuals and change staff positions to better meet their strength and the clients needs.
  • When re-joining Barclays in January 2023, they were listed as the worsted performing builder on their clients panels, in June 2023, we achieved number 1 status for on clients score cards which was a great achievement in a short space of time.
  • Unfortunately in August 2023, the 80 year directors decided to close the business and retire after over 40 years in business.
  • I worked at Barclays for many years and helped grow a business from near insolvency in 2014, to winning the national best builder award in 2018 out of over 100 builders for the largest insurance group IAG , I then subsequently watched its decline after I left the business and returned to bring it back to life again.
  • I stayed behind with the director to wind down the business, ensure all remaining repair works were completed to contract obligations and to ensure all trades were paid before the closure.

Major Works Construction Supervisor

Bay Building Services
07.2022 - 02.2023
  • I joined bay builders as the large loss supervisor which entails rebuilding fire damaged homes and commercial units.
  • During my short tenure at Bay, i completed a number of projects quickly which included the demolition and rebuild of a commercial Launderette on Canning hwy, renovation of a fire damaged cosmetics factory in Perth, replacement roof and full renovation of a duplex in Coogee amount others projects.
  • Unfortunately, 6 months after starting the position i found i needed to have major surgery, where i would need 2-3 months to recover.
  • As i was the only supervisor trained as a major works supervisor with no covering supervisor, i decided to pre-warn the business i would be leaving, so they could find a suitable replacement in time to take over my role and so i could concentrate on my recovery as I was unsure if the surgery would be successful.

Construction Supervisor

Midcity
11.2021 - 07.2022
  • I joined Midcity Group in November 2021 as my first role back as a supervisor/estimator for the mid to large loss department.
  • My portfolio of work ranged from complete rebuilds of fire damaged houses, small commercial projects, down to timber for repairs due to my background in the flooring industry.
  • My day to day activities were to project manage approximately 30 complex projects which involves setting the expectations with the clients and trades and to achieve a satisfactory outcome for the client and the business.
  • I left Midcity to join Bay Building, as they had exposure to larger commercial projects, which i felt was important to build my skill set.

General Manager

Access Timber Flooring
03.2018 - 10.2021
  • As business development manger for Barclays, I was on the look out for a business that we could purchase, add efficiencies to increase the service to the insurance industry and move into the boutique building sector.
  • Access Timber Flooring was an opportunity not to be missed, a well known, high quality business of 30 years which had stalled and required a fresh perspective.
  • The director and general manager of Barclays asked me to and started a complete overhaul of the business from staff, suppliers, products, processes, customer service and clients.
  • Since taking over the business we achieved substantial growth year on year, starting with 1 installer and myself, to a team of 12.
  • I diversified the business into different sectors for better protection, brought in new systems to upscale the business, fine tuned our business processes with customer service, award winning high quality workmanship and innovation as the core principles and building a new website which is still current.
  • Culminating in winning floor of the year at the ATFA awards 2019

Business Development Manager

Barclays Building Services
06.2017 - 03.2018
  • I changed my position within the company to look for additional business opportunities for Barclays that would compliment and enhance profits for the business and provide cost savings/better value for money to our insurance clients.
  • I also looked at other business opportunities to diversify Barclays away from an over reliance on the insurance sector and to better protect the business in a fast paced and fast changing industry

Project Coordinator

Property Wizards
08.2013 - 03.2014

Coordinate unit development projects from inception to completion.

I joined Property Wizards on a temporary basis to help them close down the construction arm of their business, the construction manager parting ways with the business left a lot of loose ends with contractual obligations and construction projects in progress.

I firstly implemented new budget software to allow a structured process and overview of all outstanding contracts, then created the processes to systematically complete all the obligations within the contracts, whether that was site surveying, DA approval, titles, construction costs or winding down and finalizing construction projects.

After 8 months of hard work i successfully completed all contractual obligations and handed over 25 developments to clients and helped wrap up the remaining 22 contracts to wind down 47 construction projects in total.

After closing down the construction arm of the business and completing my contract, i took time off for personal/career development.

My general day to day tasks were as follows:
- Carry out pre-contract meetings.
- Provide accurate project cost break down and analysis.
-Provide and meet conditions for obtaining titles.
- Provide titles to enable construction.
- Finalize design of the development with the client.
- Obtain DA Approval.
