Reflection

A student has a plaster cast upon their leg, was non-verbal, displayed behavioral issues, they were tactile and often smeared feces. I was instructed firstly to ignore the escalating behaviors, and the student progressed to smearing bodily excrement. I was advised to take the student and clean them, I assisted the student to a bathroom and began to manage the situation. I began the cleaning process; this caused the plaster cast to become damp. My principal addressed me, informing me about the possible allegations that could be brought against me, as policy requires two learning officers to shower students at all times, and the plaster cast should have been covered. I explained, during the situation, my priority was only towards the student’s health and safety., Deflated, and overwhelmed by the situation confronting me, I wanted to assist the student as quickly as possible, I felt I had acted promptly at the time, but lacked adequate exposure or training to these earlier situations. I felt I had made the right decisions at the time, and my priority was to assist the student. I did neglect the plaster cast, as I was trying to clean, as quickly and efficiently as possible. I feel the experience magnified developing skills within my professional practice., Engaging with my professional training officers and ensuring I am more aware of the boundaries of my practices I can operate safely within the scope of practice. Ensuring future situations are more proficient and practiced more effectively. I could not call out for assistance as some students are triggered by sudden calling out and rapid changing environments. I believe I acted within my duty of care, taking the most proficient course of action., If I had not acted swiftly in my course of actions, this situation could have escalated to the point of requiring medical assistance, possible hospitalization. I acted, considering the health and safety of this particular student requiring high medical care and supervision., After reviewing my actions, I find I acted in the best interests of all concerned, and if there were other support staff, I would have called for their assistance. I feel this magnified the faults in our previous systems and how we dealt with confronting situations such as this. All staff were offered communication devices that were carried as part of our uniforms, and health and safety were reviewed., Health and safety, child protection, and one’s rights and responsibilities, I am more aware of legal obligations. I am more aware of the strength and importance of teamwork, combined with medical situation. I can advocate better for those in my duty of care, whilst ensuring their dignity is respected and upheld ensuring health and safety is paramount for all in my care.

Attributes

I am organised, honest, reliable and astute, I am a firm believer in team dynamics and objectively working towards maximum outcomes. I have the ability to remain calm and poised in any situation that may arise, combining an ability to work closely together with my peers in a team effort, maintaining competency and professionalism at all times, I present a friendly and calming disposition when engaging with others. I have found myself to advocate clearly and concisely for those under my duty of care, presenting empathy and compassion which has been demonstrated in my work and throughout the fields of my chosen career. In pursuit of developing academically, my goal is to become a clinician nurse specialising in paediatrics and mental health. I began my career in the aged care sector and have progressed to working within the department of education, my roles have progressed from an assistant in nursing to a medical officer and a student learning support officer, this has required me to work closely with the elderly and also with children, that have various complicated medical requirements. Exposure to various environments has required me to assist physical and behavioural needs, which have included medications, and other forms of personal requirements to assist in their daily living and educational objectives. These positions have regularly required legal documentation, whilst maintaining respect for each individual’s rights and privacy. This introduction into the medical field instilled a passion for assisting others, and as my journey continues in the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in nursing, I wish to continue to obtain a master’s degree and specialize in the field of paediatrics & mental health. I believe combining my experiences from my professional history with academic pursuits could only be beneficial in the fields of paediatric care, and combining future studies in mental health nursing.
