My language skills were initially cultivated during the 3 years I spent living and working in a rural Japanese community, followed by a 6 month intensive period of instruction as per my scholarship requirement prior to entering university in Tokyo.
These skills were considerably enhanced through my role as a studio and roving presenter for NHK TV, where a high level of competency in Japanese was a prerequisite for the position.
The role required significant interpersonal and advanced level language skills to follow cultural and linguistic protocol, engage general members of the public on camera as well as the segment guests in their native Japanese, while working alongside a revolving camera crew and production staff.
