General Technician, Ground Support Equipment
Royal Air Force
09.1983 - 11.1995
I joined the Royal Air force (RAF) in September 1983 at the age of sixteen
I spent 12 years in the RAF
During which time I was posted to a variety of locations around the world, including Germany, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands
My trade in the RAF was that of Ground Support Equipment Technician
My duties included maintenance & repair of aircraft associated ground equipment, such as generators, pumping equipment, hydraulic test rigs, lifting & rigging gear, high reach equipment and weapon loaders
Some of the more unusual duties included servicing mobile early warning radar units & aircraft emergency arrestor systems in remote locations
Some of the advantages of joining the RAF were the excellent training programs available to me at all stages of my career, from basic training to more in depth fitter training as well as other in-house courses
I was also able to attend part time college courses to gain civilian qualifications
The RAF also encourages participation in sporting activities and adventurous training
I was a regular member of the RAF Sailing Team for most of my time in the service
This took me to race meetings all over the United Kingdom and Europe
I was also involved in the organisation of sailing courses and training of novices to RYA
Level 2 on numerous occasions
As well as racing and instructing I was able to take part in and lead yachting expeditions in various parts of the world as both crew member and skipper
