I have worked on the BHP mine site for Monodelphous as mostly a fitter. This work has been for projects, maintainace and shutdowns. This has been a wide range of jobs from rebuilding pumps to replacing damaged pipework. A lot of work also included working with bhp employees doing there everyday maintenace on fixed plant. Having a HA truck license I did a lot of driving on and off site to deliver equipment and general goods from workshop.
My work entailed maintaining and repairing heavy fixed plant. I was required to assess and evaluate a situation and then repair or replace as required. When I was in the 2IC position I was also required to obtain quotes from outside sources and make decisions on the best outcomes.
This was only a casual Job to help with shutdown work at Nystar in port pirie. The job involved maintenance work on fixed plant around the plant. Weld repairs on water jackets, weld repairs on furnace roof to replacing pipework and valves.
I started in the apprentice boiler shop for the first twelve months doing our basic training, this included welding, oxy cutting, reading and understanding drawings that we had to mark out and fabricate using the tools and equipment we had. In the second year we were put in different workshops around the site to repair and replace damaged and broken equipment with a trademan to teach us. This continued in our third and fourth year. All of my trade school was completed at whyalla tafe.
