Student Nurse

MACH
11.2022 - 12.2022
  • Finished four weeks of placements as a first year Student Nurse in Community (Maternal and Child health)
  • During my first-year placement at MACH, while my hands-on experience was limited, I had the opportunity to observe the vital work of nurses with mothers and children. I learned how nurses provide counselling and support to families, and I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of immunisation in preventing illness. I also observed the process of conducting health assessments in babies, from head-to-toe evaluations, and learned about the collaborative nature of healthcare by connecting with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care. This experience also highlighted the critical role of advocacy in ensuring the health and wellbeing of both mothers and babies.

Student Nurse

University of Canberra Hospital
  • Finished 3 weeks placements as a Student Nurse at University of Canberra Hospital
  • I completed a 3-week placement in the Cotter Ward, Slow Stream Rehabilitation Unit at the University of Canberra Hospital, where I worked with patients recovering from a variety of conditions, including spinal cord injuries, strokes, neurogenic conditions, limb weakness, fractures, brain injuries, Parkinson's disease, amputation, and post-orthopaedic surgery. During my placement, I was responsible for taking vital signs and observations, administering subcutaneous injections and medications, and monitoring Blood Glucose Levels (BGLs) under direct supervision of Registered Nurses. I also assisted patients with personal care, including providing bed baths, showers, and feeding, while engaging them in activities of their choice to support their emotional and physical wellbeing.
  • Additionally, I used manual handling equipment such as sling hoists and Sara steady lifters to assist with patient transfers. This placement provided me with valuable insights into a range of medical conditions and allowed me to develop skills in providing patient-centered care within my scope of practice. It also reinforced the importance of compassion, clear communication, and teamwork in delivering high-quality care to patients with complex rehabilitation needs.

Student Nurse

Warrigal Stirling
  • Finished 4 weeks of placement as a student Nurse at aged care settings in Warrigal Stirling
  • During my aged care placement, I had the opportunity to provide holistic and person-centered care to elderly residents with a variety of physical, cognitive, and emotional needs. I assisted with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and toileting, while also supporting mobility and fall prevention strategies. I monitored vital signs, managed continence care, and followed care plans tailored to individual residents. This experience deepened my understanding of dementia, palliative care, chronic disease management, and the importance of building therapeutic relationships. I learned how to communicate effectively with residents and families, advocate for their needs, and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Aged care nursing reinforced for me the importance of empathy, patience, and dignity in every aspect of care, and strengthened my commitment to delivering compassionate, high-quality nursing support to older adults.

Student Nurse

The Canberra hospital
  • Finished 4 Weeks placement as a Student Nurse at Intensive care unit in The Canberra hospital.
  • During my ICU placement, I had the invaluable opportunity to conduct thorough head-to-toe assessments on critically ill patients under the guidance of experienced nurses. I closely monitored vital signs and learned to recognize subtle changes in patient conditions. Working collaboratively with my supervising nurse, I gained exposure to managing patients with complex needs and high acuity. I also had the chance to work alongside a multidisciplinary team—including physiotherapists, dietitians, social workers, and medical staff, to contribute to holistic care and better health outcomes.
  • This placement significantly expanded my knowledge of advanced critical care equipment such as ventilators, IV pumps, dialysis machines, cardiac monitors, and patient monitoring systems. I was able to assist in administering medications via IV cannulas and was entrusted with the removal of cannulas and urinary catheters under supervision. Additionally, I gained experience with strict infection control practices, learned the importance of documentation in acute care, and developed confidence in communicating with both patients (when possible) and their families during highly sensitive times. This ICU experience deepened my understanding of patient-centered care in high-pressure environments and strengthened my clinical judgement, time management, and teamwork skills—critical qualities I look forward to bringing into my future nursing practice.

Student Nurse

The Canberra hospital
  • Finished 2 Weeks placement as a Student Nurse at Extended day surgery unit - The Canberra hospital
  • During my placement in the Day Surgery Unit, I worked closely with both pre-operative and post-operative patients, gaining valuable experience in the full perioperative care cycle. With pre-operative patients, I conducted pre-op checklists, which involved gathering essential patient information such as medical history, allergies, and current medications. I also played a key role in educating patients about their upcoming procedures, ensuring they were well-informed and prepared, and taking vital signs as part of their pre-surgical assessment.
  • For post-operative patients, I was responsible for monitoring their recovery based on the type of anaesthesia they received. I closely monitored and documented vital signs, pain scores, and neurovascular observations, while ensuring compliance with ward protocols and post-op monitoring policies. I also supported patients by providing education on what to expect after surgery and offered emotional support and counselling when needed. I was also able to administer IV medications under supervision, which gave me hands-on experience in delivering timely interventions and reinforced the importance of safe medication practices in a surgical setting. Additionally, I collaborated frequently with doctors to ensure patients had appropriate discharge planning in place, this included organizing medical certificates and confirming prescriptions or take-home medications.
