Teacher, Music

Chevalier College
09.2018 - 10.2023

I taught at Chevalier for five years, in a role as a secondary drama and music teacher. I took pride in knowing my students and how they learn. My experience teaching music ranges from years 7-12, including music 1, 2 and extension. I created opportunities for my students to perform, both within the school, as well as in the community. Listening to my students and their parents is key to understanding what their needs are, and I enjoy the problem solving challenge of finding a way for a student to understand a complex concept. I have been involved in putting on plays and musicals and have also conducted the choir for concerts and liturgies, as well as the orchestra and jazz band.

  • Encourage creative and complex thinking and problem solving through research based questioning techniques by Hattie and Michael McDowell.

  • Assessed and look after 150 students at any time, by working closely with staff and efficiently planning and coordinating work.
  • Devised new course content to better reflect culturally relevant and appropriate content regarding First Nations music, and to better reflect gender equality in the content.
  • A sound understanding and working knowledge of technology relevant to the work unit including music software Sibelius and NoteFlight, as well as both Google Classroom and Canvas. I identify and select the most appropriate technology for assigned tasks.
  • Networked with other educators to promote awareness of advanced teaching practices and development of 21st Century skills.

Teacher

K-12 Independent Schools & NSW Public Schools
01.2010 - 11.2014
  • Throughout my first three years of teaching, I worked in both independent schools and NSW Public Schools. I Worked collaboratively in a team to deliver interesting, engaging and relevant syllabus. Wrote program/new teaching method, conducted, taught performance, composition, theory/history.

I demonstrated excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) with all stakeholders including students, teachers, parents and colleagues alike. I worked well as a team and individually to communicate daily operational management (as relief co-ordinator) as well as keeping all stakeholders informed of ongoing developments and progress with individual students and classes as a whole in music and general classroom practice.

As a teacher I have maintained professional currency in order to continue providing up to date and best practice teaching, including content methods and ICT, completing 20 hours of professional learning in music, teaching and IT in 2014 fort the Teacher Quality Institute ACT, and 100 hours with NESA between 2019-2020.

My role as a teacher demonstrates contributing to team environments, both within a small team, collaboratively creating individual modules and units, as well as working as a whole staff in a full program review to maintain the program laterally across the full range of years.

Superior organisational skills are demonstrated in an educational setting included researching, planning and collaborating to create lessons and programs, as well as superior time management to deliver these with depth and often in short time frames. In addition, I provided the daily operational management organisation as relief co-ordinator, including communicating with staff and casuals, and timetables daily to ensure a supervisory teacher and lessons were provided to every class at all times.
  • My role as a relief teacher in regional small primary schools was formative to my teaching career. It was here that I first learned the importance of community and including parents and colleagues in ones work practices. Teaching in schools that have small numbers, and sometimes have up to three or four year groups per class was the foundation of my experience in differentiated education.
  • At Radford College I contributed to analysing the existing scope and sequence of successive courses, over thirteen years of schooling, utilising learning sequences that engage students and drive growth through structured and scaffolded programming.
