Bereavement Counsellor

  • Provided skilled, compassionate, empathic, person-centred bereavement counselling to the carers, family and friends of patients of CCSPC Service. My role also included providing counselling and support to the carers and the patients registered to the palliative care service prior to their death.
  • Also delivered skilled, compassionate, empathic, and trauma informed bereavement counselling to the carers, family and friends of those bereaved by sudden and unexpected death including suicide.
  • Skilled at working independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Provided a range of evidence-based counselling strategies to clients of all ages via a blend of face-to-face, home visits, centre visits, phone, and telehealth across the Central Coast.
  • Assessed for Prolonged and Complicated Grief Disorder using recognised, validated assessment and intervention tools. Provided evidence-based interventions to address these issues if present.
  • Provided support and interventions mainly based upon the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement to address both grief-related and life-focussed challenges.
  • Other models or approaches used include meaning- reconstruction approaches to grief therapy such as Family Focussed Grief Therapy as well as the use of Mindfulness, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Emotionally Focussed Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Continuing Bonds as well as the Tripartite Model of Suicide Grief.
  • The focus of my work is mostly through the lens of Family Systems and attachment theory, with the emphasis on the clients' history of past trauma and the impact they may have on their current situation and relationships.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • Provided culturally sensitive bereavement counselling to clients from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, CALD and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds using multicultural and feminist principles
  • Maintained confidential electronic records.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Wrote referral letters and letters of support to clients' General Practitioner or other external agencies as needed.
  • Developed and facilitated bereavement groups.
  • Have provided education and training to volunteers and the wider community.
