As a result of the Betrayal of Trust Enquiry one of the recommendations was that Diocese engaged a Safeguarding Co-ordinator to ensure that they had policies and procedures in place for Safeguarding, I was approached by the Diocese to apply for the position as I had a good relationship with the schools, colleges and parishes in the Diocese when working for CCI. I was successful in my application for the role. The position was challenging in the beginning as this was new for our parishes, however parishes have now adapted to the change with regular visits from myself, and all parishes now have a Safeguarding Officer/Team.
I initiated all Safeguarding policies, including, privacy policy, sexual harassment, workplace bullying, website policy, anti-discrimination and website policy.
I have initiated and provided all parishes with a Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct templates as well as templates for the screening of volunteers when engaging new volunteers and provided with a sample template for risk assessment.
The diocese was audited by ACSL in April 2021, I communicated with the auditors and provided all information the diocese had in place to comply with the National Catholic Safeguarding Standards, the result of the audit overall was 96% compliance with 12 recommendations, which are mainly now complied with.
