Duties included:

  • Completing an initial 12-month Transition to Practice contract.
  • Working in Tasmania’s busiest rural Emergency Department alongside 2 other nurses per shift and an on-call doctor with a fluctuating seasonal and holiday population
  • Approximately over 120 In-charge shifts commencing 6 months into graduate year until present, that required management and delegation of staff, triaging and managing patients of varying acuity in ED, on the ward, and booked appointments
  • Consistent Preceptor shifts working with nursing students, providing ongoing guided education and instruction, supervision and feedback
  • Undertaking primary and secondary patient assessments
  • Identifying cues and clinical vital observations that may reflect patient deterioration and responding as per the DANGERS observation chart protocol, escalating care, documenting and carrying out interventions as required by the senior nurse and medical team
  • The safe preparation and administration of medications, including intravenous infusions and subcutaneous and intramuscular injections
  • Maintaining standard and surgical ANTT when performing wound care and PIVC insertion, and sterile procedures such as IDC and SPC insertions and changes, and CVAD accessing and de-accessing
  • Conducting 12 Lead ECGs and troubleshooting as required
  • The admission, discharge and ongoing care for in-patients
  • Ensuring paperwork is accurately completed and up-to-date during in-patient stays and ED visits, such as progress notes, observation charts, referrals, and admission/discharge paperwork
  • Providing ongoing patient and family support and education during their stay in the hospital
  • Adhering to infection control standards and precautions throughout the hospital
  • Complying with site-specific policies and procedures to uphold best practices and patient-centred care
