Work History

Electrical Project Engineer

Shoalhaven City Council
Nowra
03.2020 - Current
  • I have completed electrical design (load side of meter), protection setting and main switchboard reviews, technical scope specifications, commissioning and asset handover. Formalised this process through a design checklists with hold and witness points from subject matter experts.
  • Designed and managed installation of Electrical and Lighting Reticulation at Major Precincts (i.e shopping centres, sporting complexes and town centres). Issues faced include staged construction with multiple overlapping certified designs. To mitigate the inefficiencies from this piecemeal approach, I created a design register where engineers can log their designs and associated engineering activities such geotechnical and environmental reports.
  • Feasibility studies of EV Charging stations and associated distributed generation at community facilities and carparks. The biggest challenge faced for these projects were electricity supply authority network capabilities. For example, the 11kV couldn't handle the extra load in some rural areas. This would result in a very expensive upgrade to the network just for an EV charging point. The feasibility study allowed for the selection of the type of charger (i.e slow, medium, fast) and also the location on a suitable 11kV feeder.
  • Design and Installation of Motor Control Centres and control panels at Wastewater and Water treatment plants and pumping stations. The issue faced was the various types of equipment and apparatus purchased resulted in the inability to stock spare parts that were compatible with the panel arrangement. I implemented a solution to standardise the four common types of Control panels and switchboards based on the motor sizing and metering type including:

- 0-37kW Outdoor Control panel with whole current metering. Pump Station

- 37- 75kW Outdoor Control Panel with CT Metering. Pump Station

- Greater than 75kW Indoor Control Panels with CT metering. Pump Station

- Main Switch Board and ATS Panel combined. Treatment Plant

  • Project Managing HV Switchyard upgrades. The issue with these sites were that the existing earth grid and security fencing were inadequate. I engaged an earthing consultant to provided the technical specifications to make the earthing compliant.
  • Engaging consultants for Commercial and Industrial parks electrical capacity review and feasibility studies(i.e Council Depots, proposed workshops). I gather equipment data and performed maximum demand calculations and power quality calculations on harmonics. I give this information to level 3 ASP consultants for the review of network capabilities.
  • Regularly, I review grading studies for protection, thermal rating and arc flash testing, Earth testing, voltage stability and voltage statutory threshold investigation. For example, voltage imbalance at pump stations caused by the injection of current from decentralised generation (PV solar) into LV Feeders onto one particular phase. Another example, regular tripping of a new circuit breaker installed at a pump station site caused by incorrect short-time settings during start up.
  • I prepare and undertake commissioning plans for a range of electrical and lighting assets, formal commissioning plans were never document at the Council. I review and witness the commissioning documentation documentation undertaken by contractors.

Design and Certification Engineer

Essential Energy
06.2023 - 05.2024
  • I took unpaid leave from Council to work in design and certification for Essential Energy where I became familiar with working for a DNSP, particularly the internal departments that work alongside the external contestable market. I familiarised myself with software and documents that I believe will be used in a future career for a DNSP or to further my konowledge when working towards NER.
  • I became familiar with Everyday Engineering and GIS Software ( Such as Smallworld GIS, VDrop, Neutron for Earthing, PowerOn). I took it upon myself to write formal training manuals for these software to be used internally at the company. I collaborated with my colleagues and engineering specialists to standardise and document the instructions for future new starters in my role. The aim was to streamline the intake training process.
  • I utilised more complex Network Modelling software (i.e PSS Sincal for Load flow and Neara for Hardware). Tis helped me understand the protection settings and flow/coordination of power between different nodes in the network.
  • I gained knowledge on Policies and Network documents directly related to safety, compliant connections, cable and protection selection, easements, installation rules, transformer sizing/maximum demand calculations and so on through the suite of essential energy documents.
  • I Processed and approved Notice of Arrangements of completed/commissioned network installations to local Councils, to allow developers to release subdivided land for sale.
  • I worked along side electrical planning engineers for Planning advice on protection sizing, thermal rating of cable/conductors and voltage stability studies.

Electrical Engineer

BlueScope Steel
Port-Kembla
04.2018 - 07.2019
  • Designed electrical systems for industrial machinery and equipment installations such as VSD Drives on overhead Cranes and instruments on process lines such as Pressure and temperature transducers.
  • Conducted troubleshooting and repairs on complex electrical systems and components using Kepler Tregoe problem solving methodology.
  • Analysed system performance through SCADA to identify areas for improvement in efficiency and reliability, through mapping trends and discussing discrepancies with a cross-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Collaborated closely with vendors to source components needed for repairs or upgrades such as faulty PLC Input and Output cards.

Utilities Technical Officer

Sutherland Shire Council
Sutherland
04.2015 - 04.2018
  • Analysed the Councils energy consumption patterns to identify efficiency opportunities. This was completed through procuring a 3rd party energy analyst to gather data from electricity bills.
  • Collaborated with stakeholders to implement renewable energy solutions such as PV Solar, LED Lighting, Load scheduling, Light sensors.
  • Tracked policy changes and trends that impact the Councils energy reporting.
  • Assessed new technologies available in the market for potential use by Council such as Voltage optimsers, commercial boilers, LED flood lighting for broadacre fields.

Student Electrical Engineer

Transelect Power Solutions
01.2009 - 01.2014
  • Whilst studying at University and after graduating, I worked for a level 3 ASP (Transelect Power Solutions) for a total of four years, where I completed distribution design work within the Endeavour Energy Network. The types of designs included:
  • Urban, residential and commercial subdivisions
  • Removal and relocation of overhead and underground assets
  • Connection of load applications
  • Public Lighting design
