I'm a Civil Engineer with over 13 years experience in industry as a Temporary Works Professional. In summary my experience has been obtained as a Temporary Works Design Engineer, a Temporary Works Supervisor, a Sales Engineer and as a National Shoring Manager, which is my current role.
Shorehire, 2020 to Current, National Product Manager - Shoring – I am currently employed as the National Product Manager – Shoring. This role can be summarised as me being responsible for the acquisition and project management of major shoring projects. I also take a leading role in the operational management and development of new and existing shoring technologies.
In my current role, my engineering responsibilities can be summarised as follows:
Temporary works tendering – I am responsible for the completion and successful acquisition of ground shoring tenders. As part of this role, I manage my team of 3 state based Shoring Managers whereby I provide training and assistance using my engineering background to secure work. I work closely with the engineering department, often mentoring them on how to produce value engineered solutions and giving them concept sketches to start off their designs which is ultimately the most critical first step for a competitive submission. I play a key role in tender submissions, so being commercially aware and in tune with industry methodology, new technologies and competitive pricing is a fundamental part of this role.
Temporary works design – When a project is secured, I am responsible for ensuring our temporary works design is not only value engineered, but also buildable and meets the requirements of the client with regards to site constraints and the proposed construction methodology of the permanent works. This involves collaborating and working closely with Shorehire’s engineering department, the client, contractors and external engineers to select the appropriate construction, installation and dismantle techniques for the shoring solution. Ultimately my objective is to ensure the safest, most economical and practical design is submitted, which reflects the costings submitted in the original tender.
Temporary works mobilisation – I’m responsible for ensuring temporary works equipment is pre-assembled, delivered and then installed in accordance with the approved temporary works design. I am often required to attend site to address buildability issues or changes to scope, and then oversee the solution. During the installation process, my role requires me to not only toolbox talk the site team on the safe use of our equipment, but coordinate staging, deliveries and also supervise the install, particularly with those contractors which do not possess experience in the task they are undertaking and therefore require a higher degree of supervision.
Product management – Part of this role requires me to work closely with the Product Development Team, where I use my knowledge of the industry to assist in the design and innovation of new and existing shoring technologies. I am jointly responsible for the pre/post hire equipment inspection procedures, product data and user manuals for all shoring products. My role also requires me to make sure all technical staff receive the required training and support to operate and supervise the use of all shoring products.
Temporary works training – A large part of my time is spent training technical and none technical staff, contractors and engineers in the safe design, installation and dismantling of temporary works equipment. I deliver this training in a number of ways, such as one on one training, tool box talks, office and site based presentations, or online presentations such as the one I recently delivered to over 200 engineers for the Temporary Works Forum via Engineers Australia.
