Student Engagement Officer

TAFE NSW
02.2014 - 01.2018
  • EXAMPLE OF A KEY ACHIEVMENT
  • 2017
  • In response to community enquires and influenced by my commitment to diversity I established a special TAFE Plus English speaking course for new migrants that were ineligible for the Australian Migrant English Program (AMEP). The group of very highly qualified women had migrated to Australia with their families/husbands in response to skills shortages in Regional NSW. They discovered when they arrived they were unable to gain any sort of employment due to lack of basic English conversational skills. This resulted in a great deal of stress and social isolation for the women, most of them with young families. The course was established in consultation with the Business Capability Unit, and collaborators included Buninyong Schools as Community Centre (where the class held and who funded the course) and Live Better Community Transport (transported the group to and from class, as the majority do not have Australian licenses). The course was a huge success and there was great improvement in the groups English and self-confidence. To complement the course, and offer a service for AMEP students, I was able to mentor the librarians in setting up conversational chat groups and book clubs in the Student Hub .Once the students gained permanent residence they were well prepared to enroll in the AMEP course. This program required high-level management, negotiation, planning and problem-solving skills
