• Service delivery
• Ensures persons in care or custody are provided for, processed and escorted/transported in accordance with jurisdictional laws, policy and procedures.
• Search prisoners within guidelines of General Instructions, legislation, and policy.
• Informs and assists prisoners with their entitlements while in custody.
• Maintains and updates accurate records.
• Ensures operation of custody process is appropriately maintained, including checking stock levels, monitoring cleanliness, ordering and distributing meals.
• Processes fingerprinting and photographing.
• Liaises with other Police Districts regarding bail conditions and other matters as required.
• Administers receipt, safe keeping, and return of prisoner property.
• Ensures management and security of prisoners when escorting between various locations.
• Ensures all service requests and complaints received in custody unit are met with professional and timely response.
• Risk Management
• Assesses prisoner's state (including mental/physical) on their entry to custody unit and facilitates appropriate referrals for treatment.
• Monitors prisoner behavior and safety while they are held in custody.
• Assesses custodial suicide risk and provides appropriate care and support for vulnerable prisoners and those at risk of self-harm.
• Escalates issues relating to vulnerable prisoners and suspicious behavior to appropriate parties as required.
• Eliminates risk of escapes through guaranteeing cell security and effective prisoner management.
• Assess relevant risk factors for prisoner safety and segregation when both held in custody and escorting.
• Maintains awareness of emergency procedures and applies these appropriately in emergency situations.
• Employs authorized physical control and restraint procedures in situations where necessary and only to appropriate level.
• Relationship management
• Develop and maintain effective staff and stakeholder relationships with internal and external stakeholders, focusing on organizational approach and management of risk.
• Ensures safety of external persons who come into contact with prisoners.
• Co-operates and works with other members of team in order to achieve team goals through supportive, open and honest approach.
• Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with external stakeholders.
• Liaises with other specialist staff, including health and social work professionals as required.
