  • Bruce as the team leader, a DB2 consultant providing high level recommendations and assisting with education, and a trainee DBA
  • The objectives of the project were to :
  • Define and implement DB2 naming standards for DB2 Objects
  • Define and implement a DB2 subsystem and application security strategy
  • Define and implement DB2 subsystem and application database backup, recovery and integrity checking strategies
  • Define and implement a DB2 subsystem and application performance monitoring and tuning strategy

  • The DB2 environment was established concurrently with the customization and implementation of a major law enforcement package whose architecture was based on DB2, CICS and CSP
  • The package was to be implemented and customised by Aspect Computing (on behalf of IBM) and trialed by Victoria Police
  • Bruce was assigned the role of DB2 DBA for the project
  • The requirements of Victoria Police meant that the package underwent substantially modification (programs and database) prior to implementation
  • The application was implemented on schedule in early November 1989 and proved to be successful
  • Just prior to implementation, the DB2 consultant resigned to return to Asia and was not replaced
  • In the six months subsequent to the implementation, Bruce spent much of his time tuning the DB2 subsystem and application
  • This was done in conjunction with a senior IBM SE who provided input to the process
  • That support from IBM ceased in early May 1990, however, Bruce continued the important task of Performance Monitoring and Tuning until his departure

  • Responsibilities/Achievements: During his last months at Chisholm Institute, Bruce was engaged by the Australian Wool Corporation to help develop an online Project Control System
  • The major requirements for this project were
  • To support all stages of the systems development life cycle as per Yourdon's 'Structured Analysis & Design' methodology
  • To provide a reporting subsystem which allowed users to track work performed against estimated time at the Project, Sub-Project, Phase and Activity level
  • To provide an online facility to enable amendments to projected time and resource estimates
  • To provide an online facility for the entry of time sheets by users of the system
  • Bruce developed the system himself using COBOL, SCREENS and PRIME's Codasyl DBMS
  • It was implemented on schedule and was accepted by the users it was developed for
  • Bruce's other responsibilities included :
  • Establishing user requirements
  • Analysis and Design (including Logical and Physical Database Design)
  • Programming and Testing
  • Creation and maintenance of Test and Production environments
  • System Documentation (Technical and User Manuals) .
