Summary

I am a hard-working, motivated, and compassionate individual with experience as a Graduate Registered Nurse/Midwife within the Emergency Department and as a Rotational Graduate Midwife with the Maternity Services of Townsville University Hospital. These roles have allowed me to gain a wealth of knowledge, critical thinking skills, clinical competency and application of skills within fast-paced, emergent, and time-critical settings. I also have extensive experience within student nursing/midwifery roles in various hospitals, both rural and tertiary, with various nursing/midwifery specialties. I aim to move my career objectives towards enhancing my skills within an organisation that will utilise my positive attributes to benefit mutual growth and success in further developing my midwifery practice. My career objectives within this role include providing effective and safe women centred care to women of varying cultural, religious and economic background in promoting positive outcomes within the perinatal period.


This role required me to,

  • Assist in promoting physiological labour and birth while ensuring safe and effective birthing experiences.
  • Conducted routine assessments of maternal, fetal and neonatal health and wellbeing during pregnancy, labour and birth and responded quickly and effectively to any complications that arise.
  • Provide critical and collaborative care during obstetric and neonatal emergencies with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Collaborated with women and multidisciplinary teams to develop individualised birth plans/preferences for women.
  • Advocated for the needs of each individual woman in fostering a supportive environment based on mutual trust throughout the perinatal period, including supporting pregnancy/ birth preferences, intrapartum care such as non-pharmacological and pharmacological pain relief and neonatal care preferences.

Maternity Ward: Townsville University Hospital - October, 2024  (80 hrs)

While under the supervision of my registered midwife preceptor, I performed varying perinatal routine and non-routine care while managing my own personal patient load. This included,

  • Continuous comprehensive observations of antenates, postnates and neonates while identifying deviations from normal findings such as maternal hypertension, uncontrolled gestational diabetes, fundus/bleeding, caesarean section recovery, maternal sepsis, preterm labour, inductions of labour, GBS observations, meconium observation, BGL monitoring in relevant neonates and many more.
  • Managing time efficiently in order to complete all tasks within deadlines while utilising good organisational skills.
  • Used critical thinking to break down problems, evaluate solutions and relate findings to my partnered midwife.
  • Assist in breastfeeding/mother crafting support
  • Assist women with pain management
  • Support women with education to make informed decisions regarding pregnancy, birth and postnatal circumstances such as induction of labour education, newborn feed/sleep schedules and preparing safely for discharge


Emergency Department: Townsville University Hospital - August - September, 2024 (320 hrs)

While immersed in this placement, under the supervision of my precepted registered nurse, I performed a range of different critical clinical and professional skills while applying accrued knowledge to individual emergent health circumstances to promote positive outcomes in a fast-paced setting while delivering collaborative care. This role required me to,

  • Monitored vital signs and reported changes to medical staff promptly
  • Administered emergency care and triage for patients in high-pressure situations.
  • Collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to develop patient care plans.
  • Educated patients and families on treatment plans and post-care instructions.
  • Assisted in the coordination of patient transfers.
  • Administered medications via oral, IV, and intramuscular injections and monitored responses.
  • Collaborated with multi-disciplinary teams to quickly assess patients and deliver appropriate treatment while constantly evaluating patient condition and reporting changes.

Ayr Health Service - April - June, 2024 (160 hrs)

Under the guidance of my precepted midwife, I was actively involved in the delivery of antenatal care while Ayr Health Service was on a birthing bypass. This required me to,

  • Perform Antenatal Booking in appointments and Antenatal Clinics.
  • Assist in leading an antenatal class,which included delivering two sessions which were intrapartum analgesia and instrumental birth.
  • I was also involved in the intrapartum care of a primigravida woman who presented to the unit while Ayr Health Service was on a birthing bypass due to the renovation of their operating theatre. I assisted in administering terbutaline to reduce uterine activity and assisted in transferring her to Townsville University Hospital for ongoing intrapartum care.


Birth Suite: Townsville University Hospital - April - May, 2024 (160 hrs)

While under the guidance of my registered midwife preceptor, I performed a range of different antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to women within the Birthing Suite. This included,

  • Assisting as the primary accoucher in the births of 12 women.
  • Performed competent post birth assessments including fundal assessments and bleeding loss post birth and escalated concerns.
  • Performed 12 Neonatal Examinations.
  • Assisted in a range of obstetric emergencies such as fetal distress, postpartum hemorrhages, instrumental delivery and preterm labour.
  • Monitored maternal and fetal condition intrapartum by monitoring vital signs, uterine contractions, auscultating fetal heart rates, interpreting CTG’s and performing vaginal examinations to assess the progress of labour.
  • Assist with 3 caesarean sections - 2 emergency and 1 elective.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in promoting positive perinatal outcomes.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments of women presenting to the Birth Suite for a range of different circumstances such as preterm labour, preeclampsia, early labour, established labour and trauma.
  • Demonstrated expertise in providing support in labor and birth, postpartum care, newborn assessments and breastfeeding assistance.
  • Developed trusting therapeutic relationships with women and their families in order to educate and empower care.


Surgical 1: Townsville University Hospital - March - May, 2023 (240 hrs)

While under the supervision of my registered nurse preceptor, I performed nursing care on a range of different patients with differing severities of clinical circumstances in the orthopedic preoperative and postoperative capacity. This required myself to,

  • Follow comprehensive care plans for patients with complex medical and surgical circumstances.
  • Demonstrated strong clinical skills in providing direct patient care, including surgical wound care.
  • Adapt well under pressure during emergency situations while demonstrating evidence-based decision making skills.
  • Successfully managed and prioritised multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining excellent communication with my preceptors.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to guide care and build positive relationships within the team.


Special Care Nursery: Townsville University Hospital - November, 2019 (80hrs)

While under the supervision of my registered nurse preceptors, I performed nursing care on a range of different neonatal patients with different admission circumstances within the Special Care Nursery. This required myself to,

  • Support family-centred care philosophy by encouraging parent participation in their baby's daily activities.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills while interacting with parents, my preceptor and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintained accurate records of neonatal vital signs, assessments, growth and clinical progress within care plans.
  • Administered medications intravenously, intramuscular, orally, and through gastric tubes.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to assess changes in a neonates clinical status quickly and accurately.
  • Collaborated with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to neonates to promote optimal care including phototherapy, IV therapy, oxygen therapy, fluid intake quotas, NGT feeding and more.
  • Document care and shift circumstances cohesively.


Ayr Health Service - July-August (240hrs)

While immersed in this placement, I, under the supervision and guidance of my registered midwife preceptors, 

  • Assisted as the primary accoucher in the births of 5 women, including one neonatal resuscitation, one preterm birth, one precipitous birth, one shoulder dystocia and two postpartum haemorrhages.
  • Monitored maternal and fetal condition intrapartum by monitoring vital signs, uterine contractions, auscultating fetal heart rates, interpreting CTG’s and performing vaginal examinations.
  • Completed 5 neonatal exams and postnatal checks of women and their babies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in providing support in labor and birth, postpartum care, newborn assessments and breastfeeding assistance.
  • Actively performed Antenatal Booking in appointments and Antenatal Clinics. This involved monitoring maternal conditions including assessing blood pressure. Also monitoring fetal growth and well-being through fundal heights, abdominal palpations, and fetal heart rate auscultation. It also involved educating women on varying potential risks of pregnancy such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.


Planned Procedure Unit: Townsville University Hospital - December, 2018 (120hrs)

While under the supervision of my registered nurse preceptor, I performed nursing care on a range of different patients with differing elective and emergent operative conditions. This required myself to,

  • Book patients in preoperatively for their pre-organised surgeries.
  • Perform baseline vital signs, urinalysis and necessary preoperative tasks.
  • Complete preoperative checklists.
  • Attend theaters with patients for clinical handovers and assist them back to the ward postoperatively.
  • Monitor patient vitals and assessments post-operatively for day and overnight cases.
  • Administer intravenous, oral, intramuscular and subcutaneous medication.


Mater Mothers Private Hospital - November, 2018 (80hrs)

Under the guidance of registered midwives, I assisted in the care of women in the birth and postnatal period. In this role I,

  • Assisted as the primary accoucher in one birth.
  • Assisted two neonates in two cesarean sections
  • Efficiently completed three examination of the newborn
  • Provided postnatal care to women following vaginal and cesarean births, including assessing vitals signs, lochia, fundus and assisting women with breastfeeding.
  • Provided neonatal monitoring of vital signs and visual observations.


Medical 2: Townsville University Hospital - June, 2018 (120hrs)

While immersed in this placement I, under the strict supervision of  my registered nurse preceptors,

  • Utilized critical thinking skills to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Performed comprehensive physical assessments of patients upon admission or during hospital stay.
  • Recognized potential problems and complications related to medical treatments and interventions promptly and communicated these to my partnered nurse.
  • Documented patient progress notes accurately in IEMR
  • Developed strong relationships with patients through compassionate communication techniques.


Birth Suite: Townsville University Hospital - July, 2018 (80hrs)

While immersed in this placement I, under the strict supervision of  my registered midwife preceptor

  • Witnessed 4 vaginal births and was the primary accoucher in an additional 4 vaginal births.
  • Assisted in managing emergent situations such as postpartum haemorrhages.
  • Fostered positive relationships with patients and families to ensure quality of care and patient safety.
  • Provided comfort and relaxation measures for mothers in labor through interventions such as massage, breathing techniques, water immersion, and music.


Ayr Health Service - January, 2018 (80 hrs)

While immersed in this placement I, under the strict supervision of  my registered midwife preceptor,

  • Performed Antenatal Booking in appointments and routine Antenatal clinics.
  • Completed postnatal checks of women and their babies in postnatal clinics and babies that presented to the ward for routine and non-routine circumstances
  • Completed healthy hearing screens alongside partnered midwives.
  • Attended antenatal classes as part of the health service.
  • Performing nursing care to patients on the general ward during my time.


Home Hill Health Service - November, 2017 (80hrs)

While immersed in my first placement I, under the strict supervision of  my registered nurse preceptor while adhering to my scope of practice,

  • Assessed vital signs.
  • Administered medications in accordance with valid orders while maintaining the 7 rights to medication administration.
  • Performed wound dressing changes
  • Assisted in collaboration with social work and occupational therapists to assess the needs for elderly patients either safely returning to their homes or requiring more assistance within a residential aged care facility.
