  • Client Details
  • “Donna” was a 60-year-old woman who suffered a serious life-threatening stroke at age 40. She was a hemiplegic and had no movement on the entire left side of her body. Due to the location of her stroke, she also had an acquired brain injury. She was also a diabetic (type 2) who required insulin injections twice daily. Donna also required medication management and I was responsible for ensuring the correct medication was administered daily. During my time caring for Donna, I was responsible for all daily tasks and activities. They included (but were not limited to)
  • Getting her from the bed to her wheelchair using an electronic hoist in line with manual handling principles
  • Toileting, showering, assisting with hair washing, shaving of legs and other regions of her body, applying creams, lotions, and personal hygiene products
  • Returning Donna to the bed to commence her morning routine which consisted of:
  • Dressing her so she could be moved to her rest and relation zone (R&R zone)
  • Wound management (bed sores), muscle stimulation of all four limbs (increase blood flow and hinder limb atrophy), foot hygiene (monitoring for ingrown nails, signs of decreased blood flow to foot region (diabetes related))
  • Making sure Donna felt feminine, and like a woman (e.g. ensuring her outfit for the day looked good, that her hair was combed nicely, helping her apply her perfumes, providing manicures/painting nails, colouring her hair
  • Preparing daily lunches, dinners, and desserts. Making sure her snack tray in the R&R zone was stocked, ensuring all food was dated and checked regularly in accordance food hygiene standards
  • Cleaning of kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, doing laundry (washing and drying)
  • Shift preparation for the next support worker which included ensuring all personal care items were stocked up such as clothes for the next day, that lotions/creams were full, that R&R zone was ready for the next shift, towels/bedding folded and put away, stocktake of essential items to ensure Donna did not run out of anything unexpectedly
  • Most importantly, enriching Donna’s life and improving her mental health by filling her days with lots of big belly laughs alongside companionship and friendship.

  • Client Details
  • “Michael” was a 40 year old male who presented with very complex needs. He had multiple mental health diagnoses including schizophrenia, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, PTSD, and anxiety with panic attacks. In his earlier years, Michael had been a heavy drug user for 20 years (Methamphetamine, Heroin and Alcoholism) and was homeless for many years, all of which affected his mental and physical health. During my time caring for Michael, I was responsible for social and home daily tasks and activities. They included (but were not limited to):
  • Providing Michael with opportunities for social and community engagement such as shopping, visiting friends, and sight-seeing
  • Meal preparation in accordance with food hygiene standards
  • Taking Michael to Church and supporting his commitment to his faith
  • Medication management, ensuring his regular medication was taken at the correct doses, and working with Michael to manage his anxiety using mindfulness and relaxation strategies rather than using anti-anxiety medication (however ultimately his independence with regard to whether he took this medication was always respected)
  • Most importantly, enriching Michael’s life and maintaining his social activities by filling his days with companionship and friendship and ensuring he felt comfortable integrating into the community.
  • Whilst Michael’s personal care needs were low relative to other client I have supported, his complex mental health issues meant that Michael’s behaviour was at times very unpredictable, and he often displayed behaviours of concern that needed to be escalated (e.g. supporting him during hospital admissions). This however did not hinder our ability to develop a strong rapport, where Michael felt he could talk to me about things that may be concerning him which were mental health related (e.g. aliens).
