    To whom it may concern,

    Re: Shopping Editor

I would like to express my strong interest in the role advertised as Shopping Editor at Broadsheet.

I have worked as a breaking news and digital editor at Nine (The Age) for the past 15 years, and as an editor and journalist at AAP, the South China Morning Post and regional media, and in communications roles where I shaped the narrative for clients across the retail, travel and education sectors. My skill in developing compelling, accurate and SEO-optimised content, tailoring content to audiences across different platforms and measuring the impact of campaigns I believe equip me for success in this position (plus I love shopping!).

My current role is homepage editor for the Age, which is one of Australia’s leading online news platforms. Over seven years in this position, I have managed our award-winning COVID coverage, daily press conferences, analysed audience statistics and promoted daily live blogs. I have also worked on major news stories including the recent death of the Queen, the pandemic, the Ukraine war, federal and US elections as well as lifestyle, culture, travel, food and sport. My role also involves contributing to social media and helping promote our content across various platforms. (here is an example of some of my work https://catherinemchisholm.journoportfolio.com/)

After many years in breaking news, I would love to move to the lifestyle, fashion, travel and culture space. I believe my work in a fast-paced newsroom environment, meeting tight deadlines and the ability to produce under pressure would be a great addition to the Broadsheet team.

I have an avid interest in all things Melbourne, and in shopping, trends and fashion and would bring experience and flair to the role of shopping editor.

My role is fast-paced and demands the ability to synthesise large amounts of amounts of information into digestible stories. It also requires quick thinking under time pressure to make sure stories are accurately covered, edited and packaged. I edit and write headlines on the homepage and choose what stories are in the mix while maintaining the balance and tone of the publication.

Previously, I was chief-of-staff for the Age’s website where I participated in news conferences, shaped the editorial direction of the website and managed coverage of breaking news such as the Bourke Street tragedy, the Victorian bushfires and the disappearance and murder of Jill Meagher. I commissioned and edited stories to make sure they were relevant, newsworthy and timely, and captivated online audiences.

As a reporter, I covered courts, politics, education, features and travel. I became adept at managing multiple deadlines, wrote stories about complex subjects I had little knowledge about and produced clear, compelling and accurate copy. I have a vast network of media contacts and am accustomed to working autonomously and collaboratively as part of a team, as well as leading teams.

I also love to travel and have recently completed a photography course on composition which I believe will contribute to my success at Broadsheet. I hope you will consider my application and I look forward to exploring this role further.

    Warm regards,

    Catherine
