Work History

Domestic Abuse Counsellor

SOLDAS (Women's Aid, UK)
05.2023 - 06.2024
  • My role within Women's Aid required me to provide Person-centred therapy to residents within the refuge and local community hub for women who experienced domestic abuse but also included counselling trauma, self-harm, OCD, stalking, depression and anxiety
  • I worked independently with clients, contracting and ensuring clients had a good understanding of the terms of the agreement, allowing boundaries to be understood and providing them with the opportunity to ask questions before therapy commenced
  • Another duty was to ensure all clinical notes were up to date and stored securely and confidentially whilst adhering to policies, ethical practice and maintaining GDPR guidelines
  • In addition to this I also made GP referrals for clients as well as signposting other sources of self- help and counselling
  • Whilst working within the refuge I was ableto offer rehoused clients continued therapy remotely allowing them to complete their therapy without the feeling of abandonment
  • This allowed me to remain ethical and keep the terms of the contract whilst remaining congruent with each client
  • The CORE- 10 assessment was used at the start and end of therapy which also aided in the help of identifying with clients what they wanted to gain from therapy and develop a goal with them
  • This also enabled the opportunity to review sessions and receive feedback, which in turn helped clients to review theprogress made and change their goal if required, therefore allowing therapy to be client led
  • The role also allowed me to offer extended sessions to clients whoexperiences severe trauma and required more time to work through their thoughts and feelings, therefore creating a safe space for them to move forward.

Person- Centred Counsellor

  • My role at Embrace involved counselling both Children and Adults who had experienced some type of abuse or crime, including sexual abuse, depression, domestic violence, trauma, anxiety and bereavement
  • The role required contacting pre-triaged clients and contracting the agreed terms of therapy before sessions commenced
  • It was also a requirement to use the CORE-10 risk assessment prior to therapy and at I the final session to help assess client development
  • Counselling within embraced required goal orientated therapy, providing children with six sessions and adults with 10
  • These sessions would be reviewed halfway through and again within the final session, which allowed for the client to review their goals and desired outcome as well as allowing reflection for myself on any feedback given
  • Another aspect of the role includedpre-trial therapy which would be handled with great care and notes were coded to prevent the client being implemented in anyway during trial
  • All notes were kept on a secure system provided by Embrace to ensure client confidentiality and the safeguarding of children
  • Working at Embrace included work with children, which required me to incorporate play therapy and creative skills to allow the child to engage with therapy and speak freely through play and arts.
