  • Caring for surgical patients under the specialities of Orthopedics, Urology, Plastics, Gynecology. This also includes learning to care for patient who specialties are outliers on the ward i.e Heart & Lung Transplant, GIT, Colorectal Surgery, Infectious Diseases and Vascular.
  • Covered the Clinical Nurse Educator when on AL, providing support and education on the floor, signing off competencies once the nurse is competent in the skill, organising education in-services on the ward i.e CVAD dressing change and removal, Simulations, new policies and procedures in the hospital.
  • I was also trained to be Nurse in Charge of 8 North within working hours and after hours where there was no support of ward manager. Delegating tasks and guiding colleagues when unsure and following hospital policy.
  • Being in charge allowed me to learn more about Patient Flow, allocating patients to beds according to their Infection Risks and team they are under.
  • Working on 8 North has allowed me to expand my knowledge and develop leadership skills, critical thinking and delegation skills.
  • I have learned how to care for patients post surgery with Continuous Bladder Irrigation and Manual Irrigation post TURP/TURB, post mastectomies, reconstruction, DIEP and other skin grafts and flaps, post op compartment syndrome - fasciotomy as was as elective and Trauma Orthopedic procedures
