Project Nelson involved the migration of the remaining WBC Life Insurance business portfolio into the TAL systems.

The process was a “lift and shift” operation. Unlike most system migrations, this did not involve an ETL of data from a Source System to a Target System. In this case, the entire CLOAS system including data, application code, database and linked interfaces needed to be “transplanted” into a completely new environment.

The new system had to be built from the ground up and is commonly known as a “greenfield” environment.

The new environment was an IBM z-series mainframe and required the installation and configuration of the z/OS Operating System, CICS, z/OS Connect, RACF security and IMS/DB as the database.

Duties:

• Install, convert, and enhance the CLOAS Workbench. This is a suite of tools that the Developers and Testers use during their SDLC for CLOAS. The CLOAS Workbench consists of ISPF panels, REXX, and JCL skeletons. There were also some PL/1 and COBOL modules that required rework.
• Convert JCL and software used by the CLOAS system so that it would function in the new TAL environment.
• Migrate the CLOAS – MIS data extract system. CLOAS-MIS extracts vast quantities of data from the CLOAS IMS database, reformats it and FTP’s it for upload into a separate system for use in statutory reporting and business analysis. This required heavy modification to tune it for running in a smaller capacity mainframe.
• Provide support and assistance during the process of bedding in the migrated systems as the OPC scheduling tool was being set up.
• Provide ongoing technical support and advice regarding the entire mainframe environment, including IMS/DB, CICS, CLOAS Workbench, JES2, RACF, JCL, REXX and CLOAS in general.
• Identify, design and implement system improvements that would reduce costs and improve efficiency of the systems.

The Greater Bank was undertaking a significant Digital Transformation. As a part of this, Informatica was used to provide the ETL for populating the new cloud-based Data Warehouse.

As a part of the project, the existing VMS/Oracle legacy systems had to be maintained and incorporated. This required the analysis, design and build of Informatica ETL tasks to replace or enhance the existing VMS processes that pass data on to the new Core Banking system, the Data Warehouse and Business areas.

Duties:

• Build a new ETL using Informatica to Interact with the VisaNet service to accept Visa transactions and reports.
• Replace the existing manual file transfer between the Chris21 Payroll system and the Sun Systems General Ledger with an automated system using a combination of JAMS scheduling with Informatica ETL processes.
• Using an Informatica ETL to replicate the process of accepting and processing Alliance Insurance commission, sales and portfolio data to pass on to the Core Banking system as well as the Data Warehouse.
• Using an Informatica ETL to replicate the receipt and processing of Cheque files coming from ANZ.
• Replace the current Powershell scripted process for updating the me@work system from extracts pulled from the Chris21 Payroll System.

Initially purchased and set up a Country Brewer franchise in my home town of Richmond NSW.

After a number of years, the opportunity arose to sell the shop and buy into the larger Country Brewer enterprise as a Franchisor.

My business partner and I grew the network over a period of 10 years starting with 4 outlets and a warehouse to become chain consisting of a warehouse and 17 outlets.

Duties:

• Accounts and financial management using MYOB and Xero Accounting packages.
• Market analysis and identification of potential commercial opportunities. This included development of business and trade connections with overseas partners in China, The Netherlands and Brazil.
• Development of strategic business relationships.
• Overhaul of the Web Site. This involved re-organising and restructuring of the site to make it more informative for the reader as well as making it easier to navigate. The result of this was an increase in online sales by 200% over a period of 3 months.
• Provide remote as well as on-site computer support for the franchisees. This involved building, configuring and installing the computers that were used for the Point of Sale on the shop counters.

• Coordinated the migration of CLOAS from DOS/VSE to MVS/ESA, and implemented real-time rather than batch processing in the converted CLOAS application.

I was engaged as Team Leader for the Y2K conversion of the Unit Trust, Lodgments, Group Super, Fasttrack (on-line New Business) and Info (on-line Enquiry) systems.

Duties:

• COBOL and Assembler/370 SME.
• Coordinated the hiring of extra A/Ps to work on the team.
• Identified documented and packaged programs, copybooks and files from the existing unconverted systems and sent them to a software factory in Perth for Y2K code checking and fixing.
• Set up and maintained the Xchange testing environment.
• Set up CICS 2.2 and CICS 4.0 regions for the development environment.
• Created and maintained JCL streams for testing, developed test plans and coordinated testing within the team as well as with other teams.
• Ensured that the new Y2K compliant code was converted correctly to run under CICS 4.0 and MVS-COBOL. This involved the migration of code to the new COBOL and CICS regions, rolling forward the date and testing using Xchange to emulate the various future system dates.
• Responsible for testing and correcting code returned by the software factory for Y2K compliance, implementing the newly converted systems and handing over documentation to the permanent staff.
• The project was 6 weeks behind schedule upon commencement of the assignment. Following the hiring of 2 more A/Ps and the application of some intensive and disciplined work practices, the project came in on-schedule, under budget and went into production error free.

Worked on various projects including the redevelopment of the CLOAS software package for Pearl Assurance and the conversion of systems for use on new platforms for Sun Alliance.

Duties:

• System Testing and version control using ENDEVOUR.

• Measured system performance to identify potential issues in a new client-server style mainframe system for the State Energy Commission of Western Australia built using Install/1
• Tier 2 support in the Foundation group liaising between SECWA in Perth and Foundation HQ in Chicago.
• Designed and built solutions using MicroFocus COBOL, CICS, VSAM and C.

• Project Leader for the conversion of the data from an existing Bonds system, which resided on 5 stand alone micros, to a new LAN based Client/Server Bonds system using an IBM 3090 mainframe as the main server repository.
• Project DBA in the development of a new Single Premium Product system (Bonds) which has a PC based front-end that communicates with the mainframe via a GUPTA gateway. This task required extensive data modelling with the use of the Bachman productivity tool set.
• Design and implement an on-line system which catered for the compulsory superannuation business, this system was written using CICS COBOL and the data storage method was VSAM.
• Provide after-hours on-call production support for several mainframe systems.
• Support and enhance a batch superannuation system as well as a CICS based general enquiry system which used an IMS database.
• Design and implement a BONDS enquiry system which interfaced with PCs.

• Aided in the conversion of all existing systems from a FUJITSU DOS/VSE environment to enable them to run on the State Bank of South Australia’s IBM 3090 MVS/XA environment.
• Performed production support within the CICS environment as training permanent staff in CICS and SDF II.
• Aided in system design and specifications for the upgrading of the existing LIFEPAC life insurance package so that it will be able to cater for the investment linked business which was being handled by CLOAS. This task required extensive user liaison.

• Aided in the final stage coding and testing of programs which are part of an entirely on‑line Life Insurance system.
• General maintenance duties for existing systems in order to reduce the backlog caused by the new system development.

• Aided in the development and implementation of the new Cardpac (credit card) interface for the Action 2000 system as well as supporting and enhancing the existing credit card authorisations and collections systems.
• Production support of the Cardpac batch and on‑line systems which also required 24 hour availability.
• Replace the internal security of the Cardpac package with a more secure RACF interface.
• Design and implementation of a hot back‑up system for use with two ERACOM (PIN validation black boxes) for the State Bank of Queensland.
• Maintained CICS communication links between the NAS EX80, Tandem and Hewlett Packard machines during the development stages of the ACTION 2000 project.

Took over responsibility for 30+ Telon PL/1 on‑line programs that required major enhancements and debugging before being put into production. This was a short term position which was required due to the Emstaff system being badly behind schedule.

Due to the tight schedule, after hours and weekend work was required to finish these programs in time for the implementation date.

• Install and debug software provided by the Dept. of Employment Education and Training (D.E.E.T.) which had been supplied to all tertiary institutions and is used by D.E.E.T. to calculate and keep track of all H.E.C.S. liabilities for each institution. The software provided required extensive debugging and modifications as it was designed and written on PC and ported to the mainframe.
• Designed and implemented a new type of batch reporting system for the Student Administration Dept. which is used to calculate graduate tax (H.E.C.S.) for each student, this task involved extensive user liaison.
• Provide production support for as well as make enhancements to the existing Students Records System.

• Maintenance of the front end for the Friends Provident PRISM Unit Linked Price Entry system (COBOL and PL/1).
• Enhance the Unit Linked bond system.
• Enhance the Valuation system.

• Assist in the modification of existing software as well as the development of new software, in both the on‑line and batch environments of the CLOAS insurance package.
• This task involved the modification of CLOAS so that it conforms to U.S.A. insurance regulations.

• Worked as a member of a three-person team of contractors whose task was to design and implement a new Debtors/Creditors system for the Telon/PL/1 based A.C.E.S.S. project. The system design stage was undertaken as a time and materials task with extensive user liaison while the coding and testing of the user approved system was performed as a fixed price project. Working via this method proved successful as there were minimal changes required to be made to the system before implementation. The system was completed before the deadline date due to the maximising of machine time through working weekends and nights for increased turn around of compiles and test runs.

• Worked as a a member of a three person team of contractors whose task was to design and implement a new unit linked Superannuation system on the mainframe to replace an existing system running on a mini-computer. The new system was mostly on‑line with some batch reporting and rollback programs.

• Worked as a member of a five person team of contractors involved in developing a new Unit Linked Life Assurance system (ULS). This system was primarily designed to run in a batch environment accessing an IMS database via native DL/I. A small number of CICS modules were required to interface with existing systems.

• Maintain existing programs as well as convert the client's Bankcard processing system to be compatible with the international Visa and Mastercard systems.
• Initially worked as a member of a team of four programmers working on the batch system until June 1986.
• From June 1986 transferred to a new team to work on the on‑line system which transmitted and received data to and from various banking installations.This work initially involved major changes to the existing CICS programs followed by routine alterations and production support.

• This two month assignment involved mainly miscellaneous tasks, tidying up loose ends on existing sub‑systems as well as specifying and writing programs for an automatic interest rate updating system to take over from previous manual procedures.

• Alternately wrote programs from provided specifications also wrote specifications for trainee programmers.
• Assisted in converting the existing Claims System from UNIVAC 90/40 to SPERRY UNIVAC 1100/70.
• COBOL was used to write all on‑line programs using HV/TIP.
• QLP and SDP were used for direct database access and screen design respectively. FILETAB was used to produce some minor batch reports.
