  • Broome base Covid lead nurse. Attending weekly meetings with health and safety team, medical directors, and executive team during the pandemic re rapidly evolving policies and processes, disseminating information and educating and base team on updates to ensure safety of patients and team.

This involved pre-test counselling after undertaking appropriate training, ordering blood tests, urine tests and swabs as appropriate, reviewing results, liaising with MO for prescribing of medications and dispensing these. Oral treatment of Hepatitis C became available for prisoners during this time. Ordering further blood tests/USS for HCV positive results to determine recent or previous infection and genotyping. Liaising with medical director for appropriate oral treatment regime. Maintaining active register of HCV treatments, patient details including genotype, concurrent infections, current treatment, due dates for blood testing according to regimes. Monitoring and reporting side effects. Ordering and reviewing bloods appropriately during treatment and post treatment.
  • Rheumatic heart disease audit and prison register. Undertaken annually to inform national register.
  • Audit of the triage process for prisoners and based on results, disseminated findings among the clinical group and management, and developed a new process that reduced waiting times and involved prisoners more, keeping them updated on wait times. This resulted in less repeat requests for the same problem, therefore less nurse time spent reviewing requests, and less doubling up and wasted appointments.
