  • Anticipating development of skills in chronic disease management, gastrointestinal assessments, medication administration, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Redland Hospital – Perioperative (21/04/2025 – 01/06/2025) – 6 weeks

  • Rotated through all areas of the perioperative environment, gaining insight into the full surgical journey, from pre-op preparation and anaesthetic induction to intraoperative support and post-op recovery.
  • In the pre-operative area, supported completion of pre-operative checklists, conducted ID and allergy checks, confirmed consent forms, and participated in pre-surgical site marking. Provided basic patient education on surgical and anaesthetic processes, reinforcing understanding and addressing concerns.
  • In the anaesthetic bay, actively participated with preparation for general anaesthesia, including assembling and checking airway equipment, monitoring devices, and IV access. Supported patient positioning and pre-induction safety checks under direct supervision.
  • Gained hands-on experience assisting with intubation, such as holding and inserting the bougie, removing it post-placement, inflating the cuff, and securing the endotracheal tube. Actively supported anaesthetists by anticipating equipment needs and maintaining aseptic technique.
  • Participated directly as scrub and scout nurse, scrubbing in for minor surgical procedures under supervision. Gained hands-on experience with sterile technique, surgical hand antisepsis, and maintaining aseptic fields.
