Climate Science Initiative Intern

Department of Water and Environmental Regulation
07.2025 - 11.2025

During my 100-hour internship with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) through the UWA McCusker Centre, I worked within the Climate Science Initiative and Climate Adaptation team, contributing extensively to communications, stakeholder engagement, digital content, and early event planning. I developed new climate adaptation material for the “This is Climate” website in response to a ministerial request, expanding the site beyond mitigation, and drafted and designed webpages for the Climate Science Initiative, Sector Adaptation Planning Program and the Adaptation Research Hub. Throughout the internship, I supported the Communications Officer with professional correspondence, internal coordination, and significant components of the Climate Science Initiative stakeholder event—including initial logistics, communications planning, social media concepts, and design work. Because I had already completed a substantial portion of the event preparation within my 100 hours, I was invited to stay on beyond the required duration to continue supporting and finalising the event. In this extended role, I produced all promotional materials (flyer, Eventbrite page, posters, thumbnails, and social media posts across LinkedIn, Twitter and Viva Engage), managed attendee communications and email enquiries, coordinated venue visits at Murdoch University’s Harry Butler Institute, drafted the media statement and briefing materials for the Director General and Minister, and delivered full event-day support including check-ins, online Q&A monitoring, and photography.

  • Managed time efficiently in order to complete all tasks within deadlines.
  • Paid attention to detail while completing assignments.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and time management skills while managing multiple projects.
  • Assisted with day-to-day operations, working efficiently and productively with all team members.

Julia Oliver (Internship Supervisor) Comment- Climate Science Initiative Communications Officer

"Clare has been fantastic throughout the Internship. Last week we attended a meeting at Murdoch university to finalise details for our event, and Clare was professional and helpful. All of her work to support the event has been of a high quality, and when needed she has quickly made changes requested by our executive staff members. She has communicated clearly when she needs assistance, been organised and punctual when completing her hours, and worked independently when I have been in meetings.

It has been a pleasure to supervise Clare and we look forward to seeing what she does in the future."
