Graduate Mining Engineer (1st Year Rotation)

Evolution Mining - Mt Carlton
07.2019 - 02.2021

Secondment with Evolution Mining at Mt Carlton (MCO) as a Junior Mining Engineer from July 2019 - Feb 2020. Officially commenced the graduate program from Feb 2020 as a Graduate Mining Engineer at MCO. The following duties/responsibilities and highlights/achievements at this site included:

  • 3 months time with mining production crew operating CAT 777F dump trucks and understanding pit operations with Shift Supervisor.
  • 3 months time with drill & blast crew assisting Shotfirer with charging production holes and spending time with surface drill operators on Sandvik DP1500i drill rigs.
  • Oversaw daily operations to ensure continuous mining productivity by producing drill & blast plans for SRG as well as creating short-term plans using Deswik.Sched (2 Weeks - Month) to present to the drill contractor supervisor and mining superintendent.
  • Involvement with the transition and optimisation process of the drill & blast plans to integrate into SRG's GPS system on the Sandvik DP1500i for drill plans to be uploaded into the drill rig system.
  • Workflow process optimisation projects were carried out myself to transition from using GEOVIA Surpac to Deswik's suite program for engineering design & planning. This involved producing a template for Deswik.OPDB (Open Pit Drill and Blast Design), and Deswik.OPSTS (Open Pit Short-Term Scheduling).
  • Planned and developed monthly SRF plans to present to mine managers and necessary stakeholders.
  • Introduction and exposure to LOM planning using Geovia Whittle and understanding its process behind it.
  • Engineered around Geotechnical issues within the pit using mine design skills in Deswik to alter the pit design and produce a cutback to try and eliminate the hazard and progress further with the pit operation. Designed and implemented a second ramp in the pit for a secondary access due to the main ramp being part of a cutback to ensure high levels of productivity and continuous production of the mine operation.
  • Implemented drill & blast design analysis using Orica's Shotplus to have a better understanding and control over the blast design (tie-in and loading, etc.).
  • Exposure to Geotechnical Engineering duties and understanding their work process with assistance from Graduate Geotechnical Engineer. Worked together as a team to produce and present risk assessments to necessary stakeholders for their input.

Mining Engineer (Vacation Student)

Evolution Mining - Mt Carlton
11.2018 - 02.2019

A 12-week summer vacation program at Evolution Mining – Mt Carlton that provided an in-depth and longer learning experience as a mining engineer. My development learning guide at Mt Carlton has provided the following opportunities of work:

  • Learning the technical process and application of drill & blast design and creating drill & blast patterns using GEOVIA Surpac.
  • Working on an individual project to set up Deswik at Mt Carlton using Deswik.CAD and Deswik.Sched for the integration of short/long-term mine planning & scheduling.
  • Producing a guide on how to set up Deswik for short-term weekly scheduling of mine production.
  • Assisting with long-term mine planning by compiling existing mine production data to correlate excavation dig rates vs. Bench heights.
  • Editing and updating resource block models using GEOVIA Surpac.
  • Assisting with improving final wall design blasts by researching articles, books and papers on open pit blasting practices and applying them to optimise blast quality.

Mining Engineer (Vacation Student)

Evolution Mining - Mt Carlton
06.2018 - 07.2018

This 4-week winter vacation casual employment position offers the exposure to the different departments at Evolution Mining – Mt Carlton in an open pit mine as a mining engineering student by providing a learning experience through specific areas of work in relation to the discipline.

My work plan included working with geologists, mine surveyors, mining engineers and the mining production team. The rotation through working with each role or department has provided insight into learning the responsibilities of mine surveying, operating trucks, mine production scheduling, time and motion study, drill/blast design and practical field work.

During my period of work experience at Evolution Mining I have acquired adequate knowledge and in addition, have been exposed to the following sorts of work as a mining engineer:

  • XRF gun data collection of drill hole rock material for Sulphur material and evaluating data in Excel.
  • Assisting with surveying and monitoring of pit components such as pit walls, ramps, waste dumps and ROM fingers.
  • Understanding technical use of drone surveying as well as fixed prism monitoring usage in mine pit and ROM area.
  • Working alongside mine surveyors to mark drill holes with paint using GPS coordinate locator imported from drill and blast design of a pit section in SURPAC.
  • Introduced into mining emergency response team (ERT) and received introductory training of First Aid involving CPR, understanding components of an ambulance and how to remove an emergency stretcher.
  • Learning dump truck operations onboard with an experienced driver and understanding fundamental purposes of mining operations equipment such as loaders, graders, water trucks, service trucks, etc.
  • Understanding roles and responsibilities of mine pit supervisors that include inspecting the mine pit for hazards, managing production teams and ensuring work efficiency as well as assisting the production team.
  • Learning theory, concepts and importance of blast design with consideration of constraints that are present.
