Having recently completed a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) at the University of Wollongong, I am eager to commence my dietetics career, exploring the intricate relationship between diet and health, and making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
ICM1 - St George Hospital, Kogarah
I gained clinical experience in a 50 bed critical care unit and aged care wards. Abiding to the NCPT, I completed nutrition assessments and provided patient-centred interventions and education including oral nutrition support and enteral and parental feeding regimens. I had the opportunity to facilitate cardiac rehab nutrition education sessions, performed ISBAR handovers, prepared discharge summaries and referrals, liaised with health professionals and actively attended MDT meetings. I utilised the electronic medical record system (EMR) and the critical care system (ERIC) to collate patient information and to document dietetic care as per departmental standards. I used their food service system (CBORD) to assist with the provision of nutrition support, to provide clinical handover within the dietetics team and to prioritise caseload.
ICM2 - St Vincent's Hospital, Darlinghurst
I gained clinical experience in inpatient and outpatient oncology, and inpatient upper gastrointestinal. Using their electronic referral system (Web DeLacy), I had the opportunity to independently identify new referrals and prioritise them within my existing case load. Following ICM1, I focused on improving my critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills whilst never losing sight of providing patient-centred care. My caseload often involved patients with complex and disadvantaged social backgrounds, providing me with insight into compassionate, holistic patient care involving the multi-disciplinary team. Within the oncology service, I became familiar with eviQ to identify anti-cancer treatment protocols affecting the NCPT and used their electronic medical record system (MOSAIQ) to obtain and document information.
FSM - Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District
I participated in a research project that focused on the patient consumption of dietitian prescribed snacks and oral nutrition supplements, and patient satisfaction of the food service system and food quality during their hospital stay. I visited multiple hospital sites across the ISLHD to observe meal and mid-meal consumption of oral nutrition support provided by dietitians. I obtained diverse patient satisfaction feedback through verbal and written surveys throughout all wards across 4 hospitals. This provided me with the opportunity to observe the importance of oral nutrition support timing, volume and patient preferences. It highlighted the importance of fostering positive relationships with food service staff and their role in the provision of dietetic care.
PIP - Renee Jennings Private Practice
I was fortunate to shadow a private practice dietitian, specialising in prenatal nutrition including gestational diabetes. This opportunity provided me with insight into building a successful business, social media presence and marketing. I created resources and completed literature reviews.
CPHN - Bloomfield Hospital, Orange
I participated in a research project examining the nutritional effects of substance abuse during pregnancy and the nutritional implications of medications used in substance withdrawal during pregnancy. I completed a literature review and created substance-specific clinician resources summarising the findings. I shadowed mental health dietetic consultations and education sessions in a variety of wards including involuntary drug and alcohol, old persons acute and patients with chronic mental illness. I observed multi-discinplinary case conferences and participated in patient cooking groups.
