Accomplishments

In my role as a company director within the disability support sector, I successfully advocated for a vulnerable participant who was experiencing financial abuse through coercive control by a family member. The participant’s funds were being misused, and their ability to make independent decisions was undermined.

Upon recognising signs of coercion, I took immediate steps in accordance with my duties under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and the NDIS Code of Conduct to ensure the participant's safety, autonomy, and financial protection. These steps included:

  • Documenting concerns and initiating an internal risk assessment
  • Liaising with Legal Aid Queensland and financial counselling services for advice and intervention
  • Supporting the participant to access culturally safe legal advocacy
  • Coordinating with relevant external safeguarding agencies while maintaining client confidentiality
  • Ensuring that all decisions were made in line with the participant’s expressed wishes and best interests
  • Updating organisational policies to strengthen early identification and response to coercive control and financial abuse

This experience confirmed my commitment to client-centred, ethical practice and the importance of directors exercising due care, acting in good faith, and prioritising the safety and rights of those in our care.
