Economic Development Officer - BUSHFIRE RECOVERY

This was a 12 month contract position for the Business and Innovation Branch or the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC).

I was embedded with the Bushfire Recovery Team to address the economic impact on the region as a result of the 2020 Bushfires and preceding drought Later our scope extended to include the impact of COVID-19.

My primary purpose within this team was to:

  • Enhance economic development and tourism in the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Local Government Area.
  • Work with local business in Braidwood, Bungendore, Nerriga and Araluen and surrounding regions to identify economic impacts, develop strategies and implement actions to restore affected local economies and trade.
  • Managed data and prepared reports regarding economic development goals for the community.
  • Built and maintained relationships with strategic community and business leaders.

My achievements in this role:

  • Supported local businesses and primary producers in their economic recovery from 2019/20 bushfires and the impacts of COVID-19.
  • Connected 156 local businesses and primary producers with government grants.
  • Established relationships with individuals, Federal Government agencies, Non-Government Organisations, corporations and individuals, like Sir Peter Cosgrove, Business Council of Australia and Bendigo Bank in order to bring much needed financial support to the region, resulting in over $10.2 million in positive economic impact on the community

StakOne was a SaaS startup supplying cloud-based operational software to franchises and hospitality staff.

The product allowed multi-store owners to remotely manage their operations and ensure priority tasks were being completed in each store.

My role was to:

  • Prospect, qualify, and close new business opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with clients to increase customer lifetime value and reduce churn.
  • Conduct product demonstrations and presentations to prospects to showcase the value of Staktask.
  • Negotiate and finalize contracts, pricing, and terms.
  • Accurately forecast and report on sales activities using CRM tools.
  • Attend industry events and trade shows to network and generate leads.

The Canberra Beer Company was my first acquisition. The business was a small micro-brewery where we helped bars make and brand their own beer.


The business was a no-money down, distressed acquisition that I failed to turnaround.

After a short time working with the founders of Zambrero I was able to become a franchisee.

  • I was the 10th Franchisee in the Zambrero system and took our store from $0 to $970,000 turnover in 4.5 years, which at the time was significant revenue for a store in the franchise.
  • By the end of the first year I was able to hand over the day to day running of the business to a store manager.

As General Manager fo the company held stores my role was to:


  • Manage the opening of new locations.
  • Ensure the effective operation of the company stores and compliance with the Zambrero brand systems and procedures.
  • Develop new brand systems and procedures to ensure continuous improvement for the Franchisor and franchisees.
  • To improve the saleability of company stores through their effective staffing, operation, and business performance.
  • Act as a contact point for stakeholders with regards to the operation and management of company stores.
  • Improve the financial performance of company stores in the key areas of sales growth, cogs, and labour.
  • Actively monitor and report on key financial variables.
  • Establish company stores reporting, tracking and financial routines to improve store profitability.
  • Recruit, develop and mentor the corporate stores mangers as required to take ownership of the day to day running of the store.
