Regional Transport Manager - Victoria

Responsible for the safe, timely and cost-effective provision of quarry transport originating from six (6) quarries to locations around metropolitan Melbourne, greater Geelong/Surf Coast and east Gippsland. This operation consisted of generally between 300 and 400 deliveries of quarried rock and sand by internal and external transport resources. These deliveries were managed through the Customer Service Office which performed the client liaison, quarry interface and service scheduling from the time of an accepted quote through to invoicing. Oversight for the activities of a dedicated Driver Trainer, fleet maintenence and subcontractor management were included in my duties.

Responsible for the effective and efficient transport of bulk steel from Production Sites to Distributors and Internal Customer locations throughout Australia by 3PL providers. Overarching responsibility to ensure business operators could operate in a manner consistent with the company’s contract relationships to achieve the Group’s supply chain performance management targets. This was a multi-modal, multi-carrier operation where my role was to be the subject matter expert in the transport arena of a major Optimisation program. Linehaul transport represented expenditure of $80M at that time.

  • Achieved financial and service performance objectives for Fonterra in the last 5 years.
  • Created and Implemented the strategic direction and focus on safety, compliance, quality, and cost containment in the national transport services provided to the broader business at Fonterra.
  • Radically redesigned the Farm Milk Collection operations model at Fonterra to service internal requirements and completed a reduction in personnel without adverse industrial relations or customer service outcomes (per Farmer CIFOT and Engagement reports).
  • Established the Fonterra Lead Driver Program to increase the pool of expert drivers resulting in consistent delivery of defensive and fuel-efficient driver mentoring resulting in an 11% reduction in fuel consumed by the fleet.
  • Directed the renegotiation of the Fonterra TWU Enterprise Agreements in Victoria and Tasmania during a time of high CPI in Australia. Cost increases negotiated at 1/3 of the original log of claims and below CPI across the term.
  • Created, Negotiated and Implemented the transport contracting strategy to deliver initial savings of $1.2M PA with on-going cost savings through continuous improvement and service improvements at Fonterra.
  • Initiated and led by example, professional standards in warehouse operations at Fonterra to minimize financial exposure and reduce transport costs to support sales goals.
  • Represented Fonterra in an industry forum related to potential for Foot and Mouth preparations by the dairy industry.
  • Commanded the management of a depot integration at Toll Express Victoria. This included engagement with the construction team to manage various stages and the operational impacts ensuring safe operations of the Horsburgh Drive site over a period of 6 months.
  • Established a strong culture at Toll Express Victoria in striving for continuous improvement through alignment of team goals and clear and direct leadership in the reduction of revenue leakage by 2% through consistent performance of check-weigh and cubing of originating freight activities.
  • 20% reduction in Injury Frequency Rates and improved on-road compliance at Redstar Transport.
  • Worked within a select team to realign the strategic direction for Kalari which radically re-aligned the business to become a specialised mining services provider to achieve double-digit returns on invested capital which was achieved within 2 years.
