With over 20 years of experience in the construction industry, Craig is a seasoned Commercial Leader. Starting as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor at Laing O'Rourke in 2004, he has successfully contributed to and lead various construction projects in Australia and the UK. His expertise spans across new-build and refurbishment projects for public and private clients in sectors such as residential, leisure, infrastructure, civil road and rail, marine, and defence.

Throughout his career, Craig has progressed from a Quantity Surveyor to his current role as a respected Commercial Leader responsible for the Victoria Region. Craig has also previously undertaken a regarded role of Commercial Executive Assistant, reporting directly to the Commercial Director and Managing Director, providing valuable insight and a depth of understanding of executive-level management of the business.

Known for his highly effective management style, he is admired by both his peers and team members.   • Overall responsibility for the requirements of the Commercial function across the Victoria region, containing a portfolio of projects in excess of $4billion; including optimising margin while protecting the business from commercial risk, managing commercial teams on all projects, and working closely with the Regional Director to provide strategic commercial support in all aspects of our operations.
  • Consistent delivery of strong commercial results, including revenue, margin and cash targets.
  • Management of pre-contract commercial activities on a range of projects, across various sectors, clients and procurement models.
  • Leading of a highly complex and and significant reset arrangement on a critical project, including managing a multi-discipline team of legal support and forensic planning and quantum experts to successfully negotiate a genuine "win-win" outcome for the business and our client.
  • Leading a commercial function of 100 staff, creating high performing and multi-skilled teams across projects and providing ongoing support through professional development programmes and mentoring.

  • A strong focus on projects with the Department of Defence, leading to being recognised as a trusted advisor on a range of pre and post contract commercial matters to the client and internal stakeholders.
  • Management of the commercial resolution of various complex contractual issues, claims and disputes across a range of projects, including leading negotiations with clients and subcontractors, with a proven track record of delivering excellent outcomes.
  • Responsible for the growing and development of commercial function of 80 staff, including leading recruitment for multiple remote-based projects.
  • Undertaking of a business-wide review into 'disallowable costs' across a range of Alliance and Reimbursable type contracts, with various recommendations provided to the Executive implemented successfully.

Project Commercial Leader - ASMTI

  • A key initiative under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed between Australia and Singapore in 2015, the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI) expanded and developed the existing Shoalwater Bay Training Area in regional Northern Queensland.
  • As Project Commercial Leader for the $800M Managing Contract, responsible for leading of the commercial, finance and procurement functions on the project.
  • The project was completed ahead of schedule, under budget and delivered excellent outcomes for Laing O'Rourke, the Department of Defence and the local supply chain. The project has since received external recognition through various industry awards.
  • With a strong focus on local procurement to leave a lasting legacy in the region, a tailored procurement approach and market engagement strategy was developed and implemented. This resulted in >80% of expenditure through local businesses in the region.
  • Building of a highly engaged and performing team in a regional location, with a strong focus on continual professional and personal development, many of whom have continued to progress significantly within the business into senior roles.

Senior Commercial Manager - 100 Mount Street

  • The 100 Mount Street project is a design and construct project undertaken by Laing O’Rourke for Dexus Wholesale Management
  • The mixed-use commercial development comprises of 37 storeys + 6 basements, providing 42,194 m² NLA of A / Premium Grade office NLA; 113 car spaces; Public space on ground level supported by retail / food tenancies; 5-star Green Star Design & As-built Ratings; 5-star NABERS energy and 3.5-star NABER water ratings and Dedicated End of Trip Facilities
  • As commercial lead for the project, Craig has overall responsibility for commercial aspects of the project - including procurement and management of Subcontract and Consultancy packages; management of client changes and Head Contract administration; and cost management to ensure the successful delivery of this landmark project for the business

Senior Commercial Manager - Pacific Highway (W2B)

  • The $4.3bn project is Australia’s largest regional infrastructure project
  • Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will be deliver project using a Delivery Partner model similar to the approach used for the construction of the London Olympics infrastructure
  • The project involves the duplication of approximately 155 kilometres of road to a four-lane divided road on the Pacific Highway
  • Having initially being based in Grafton reporting directly to the Commercial Leader for the start-up phase of the project, Craig moved on to be the Senior Commercial Manager responsible for the delivery of the Project
  • In addition to providing cost advice regarding potential design solutions and optimisation to ensure the most economic and suitable design for the works, Craig and his team were also responsible for the management and timely delivery of a number of bespoke Detailed Design contracts worth in excess of $100m

Commercial Executive Assistant to the Commercial Director

  • Reporting directly to the Australian Hub Commercial Director, this 12 month role provided the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the executive-level management of the business
  • In addition to exposure to, and forming of relationships with, senior leaders both within the Laing O'Rourke business and the wider construction industry, key duties included the preparation of Hub-level monthly commercial reports, involvement in a number of business improvement initiatives, and the drafting of a Commercial strategy aimed at growing a world-class commercial function within the business over the next 3-5 years

Commercial Manager - Port Botany Terminal 3

  • The Sydney Port Botany Terminal 3 (SPBT3) project involved the construction of a new container terminal for Sydney International Container Terminal Ltd, which is owned by Hutchison Port Holdings, the largest freight operator in the world
  • Laing O'Rourke is undertaking the major civil works and associated services over 46ha of reclaimed area
  • Reporting to the Senior Commercial Manager, Craig's responsibilities included the tracking, management and reporting of project costs, both internally and to the client team, including working collaboratively with the Client and key stakeholders to resolve any commercial matters efficiently
  • Craig provided commercial and cost advice regarding these measures to ensure the maximum benefit to all stakeholders when they are implemented

Commercial Manager - K10 Berth Construction

  • This project involved the construction of the K10 berth at Kooragang Island for Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG), comprising a new 465m long wharf adjacent to the existing K8 and K9 wharfs, two new concrete shiploader rail beams and all associated drainage and road works
  • As Commercial Manager, Craig was responsible for managing the commercial team to ensure the successful commercial delivery of the project
  • The procurement of subcontract works and material supply ahead of programme enabled the project to target and achieve a significantly early completion date
  • This was complemented by the ongoing agreement of variations and claims with the client team, which in turn enabled agreement of the final account for the works promptly upon handover of the project over two months early
  • The Newcastle K10 Project went on to win both the NSW and Australia MBA Excellence in Construction Awards

Commercial Manager - K7 Wharf Extension

  • This project involved the supply, manufacture, installation and construction of facilities to provide additional capacity at the existing Coal Terminal on Kooragang Island, Newcastle
  • Laing O'Rourke delivered an extension to the K7 concrete and steel wharf, including the existing conveyor
  • As Commercial Manager, Craig managed the project's Commercial team and held responsibility for all project commercial elements, including the management of costs, values, budgets and reporting
  • In addition to preparing internal and external reports for senior management and the client team, he also provided commercial and contractual advice to the site team on a range of issues

Senior Quantity Surveyor - Hepworth Art Gallery

  • The Hepworth Art Gallery is a prestigious, high-specification, landmark art gallery constructed for the City of Wakefield Council in the UK
  • The project was described as 'unbuildable' by some, with the external façade and roof comprised entirely of cast in situ, bespoke pigmented, self-compacting concrete, one side of which was set in an adjacent river
  • As the Senior Quantity Surveyor on the project, Craig was responsible for the submission and agreement of variations with the client team, including the prompt subsequent agreement of the final account for the works
  • He also submitted and agreed monthly progress claims to the client team, ensuring payments were received on time

Quantity Surveyor - Leeds City Museum

  • This project involved the refurbishment of a prestigious museum in Leeds city centre
  • The project transformed Leeds’ old Civic Theatre into an exciting new state-of-the-art museum
  • Craig was responsible for the procurement and management of a number of packages, both subcontract and directly delivered, including the undertaking of monthly valuations and the processing of subcontractor payment claims
