Aboriginal Family Links
Tenterfield Social Development Committee
04.2012 - 05.2017
My role as an Aboriginal Family Links Worker included two components.
1) Provide a supported playgroup to all families with children up to 6 years of age.
2) A home visiting support service to Indigenous families of the Tenterfield area, with children up to eight years of age.
The Aboriginal family links program provided an individual family intervention service for Indigenous families who need support in developing parenting skills. Its main focus was primarily with Indigenous families with new babies, first time parents and families with special needs.
The supported playgroup was used to enhance the parenting skills of all families and to also provide an opportunity for parents to share experiences of parenting and for children to socialise, play and learn in a structured and positive environment.
The Home visiting component provided support, advice and referral for Indigenous families, to undertake home visits to families where necessary and provide parenting information and skill development for Indigenous families with young children and also to develop support networks and appropriate play group activities for Indigenous families and young children in the Tenterfield area.
The Aboriginal Family Links program became a part of the local service network which included the local primary schools, Child and Family Health Nurses, The Benevolent Society and key Indigenous organisations in order to promote an interagency approach to supporting young families. Links with locally based community groups was essential to ensure local involvement in developing and community networks.
The program also supplemented the Home visits with group activities to assist parents to enhance social networks, life and parenting skills (e.g. parenting groups, supported playgroups and transition to school programs).
Model good parenting practice and assist families to identify their needs, set achievable goals and work towards their fulfilment.
Advocate for and refer families to other services, when required e.g. health professionals, child care, early childhood disability intervention and housing, while at all times adhering to the high importance of confidentiality.
Provided consistent support for students and families in extracurricular activities while fostering a sense of community and belonging within the Supported Playgroup.
Maintained accurate records of attendance and progress reports for effective communication with parents and administrators.
Served as a mentor for new families, providing guidance on effective teaching strategies and classroom management techniques.
Enhanced student comprehension by utilizing various teaching methods tailored to individual learning styles.
