The company decided to move me from the factory floor into the office so I could do drafting for them for the rest of my work experience, they also offered for me to work part time for them while I studied, which I did for the first half of 2007, then I decided to leave university and work full time with the company, my duties included the following:

  • Administration work including: Purchasing materials, organising deliveries, organising documentation, following through ITPs, created stock transfers, creating stock jobs, and stock registers for stock parts within tanks.
  • Studying and then implementing competitive manufacturing techniques and QA.
  • Helped the company achieve the certification of ISO 9001-2008.
  • Creating SOPs for machinery used in the factory.
  • Design and detail drafting and also provided engineering support to the mechanical engineer, for designing new structural components for the tanks and updating old designs.
  • Created master spreadsheet programs to create bills of materials and Quote sheets.
  • Programming the turret punch machine and optimizing what parts we could get out of each sheet.

Worked in afternoon shift while I was studying at University.

My job was to clean up the parts from the laser bed once the laser had finished cutting the parts out of the steel sheets, then stacking them on pallets ready for dispatch.

Accomplishments

  • Used Microsoft Excel to develop inventory tracking spreadsheets.
  • Used Excel to create and automate BOM's that can turn a customer's requirements into a workshop BOM for production.
  • Streamlined the workshop floor to maximise flow of production.
  • Helped design a cheaper, stronger bracket that could be made twice as fast.
  • Created an excel spreadsheet that calculates the best use of material for cutting lengths of steel.

  • Designed and had built a bracket to increase the strength of the support of a hose reel that was easier, faster and cheaper to make.

  • Created and estimation spreadsheet in excel to speed up the way we were quoting.

Burdens Sheetmetal

  • Helped turn the Sheetmetal division from loss making to a profitable part of the company.
  • Created an app to track flashings and fabrication jobs going through from order to delivery, to enable fast response time for ETA's, also to gather data about quantities of flashings and the levels of materials we were using to help forecast stock levels.
  • Created a spreadsheet that determines the cost of our labour and materials and estimates the costs of flashings and different fabricated items by just giving the details from the customer.
  • Came up with a design of a tool that we had purposefully built to notch out a profile of a corner of a hot water service tray, reducing the labour of that process from 2 and 1/2 mins to 10 seconds. We now use this tool for thousands of trays.
  • Helped create a case for CAPEX expenditure to secure a large piece of equipment.

  • Riband Steel – 2002 – Helped out for a few weeks while on School holidays cutting steel for the roof of the Southern Cross Station.
