  • I led a growing department comprising various subspecialties. Provided policy-directed multidisciplinary team management of emergency and elective cases.
  • In 2 years, I managed over 1,200 patients with various general surgical concerns, both at outpatient and inpatient bases, mostly consisting of hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases and injuries.
  • Services included laparoscopic surgeries, sigmoidoscopies, trauma surgery, and open surgeries as the need arose. Some major operations were 80 laparoscopic cholecystectomies with 5 intraoperative cholangiographies, 4 open cholecystectomies, 13 exploratory laparotomies for trauma, 5 for intestinal obstruction.
  • Performed on-call duties covering 30-day/month duties.
  • I provided on-the-job training for 3 specialists and senior specialists, intern doctors, and resident doctors continuously. I was responsible for delivering monthly hospital lectures on surgery and endoscopy topics.
  • I met key performance indicators which included post-operative infection rates of less than 4% in 1 year, increasing the performance of laparoscopic surgery in the hospital. I did the first laparoscopic hernioplasty (7), laparoscopic duodenal perforation repair (5). I increased the rate of diagnostic laparoscopy and laparoscopic ectopic pregnancy excision in conjunction with Ob/gynae dept.
  • Achieved a zero waiting operative list in optimal time.
  • Other key performance indicators met were a postoperative readmission rate of less than 2%, Venous thromboembolism phenomena of a 0%, postoperative hematoma rate of 0%, and reoperation rate of less than 1%.

My committee went on weekly campaigns on health matters to various government offices, council headquarters, etc. We also executed a massive campaign on HIV ERADICATION at marketplaces. We went on hospital visitations, especially the children’s and women’s wards. We also organized and carried out polio vaccination programs in nearby villages. I persuaded and got at least thirteen corps members to freely donate their blood to potential accident victims in partnership with the Save Accident Victims Association of Nigeria (SAVAN) and St. Mary’s Hospital, Gwagwalada.
