  • Employed at BHP South Flank Mine site as a Geoscience Field Technician
  • Some of the key responsibilities that are involved in my role is ensuring a high level of safety - Undertake all sampling related tasks, recording of information into electronic systems, sample/core pickup and dispatch, ensuring correct safe manual handling, reporting an effective handover to supervisors and leads, documenting any hazards, assisting in surveying, escorting of equipment (experience with Komatsu FrontRunner systems) to/from project areas - escorting vehicles safely in the mining pits, ensuring hydration testing has been done prior to starting a day of work, providing technical geology support in the field, ensuring a high level of understanding in relation to our databases and the importance of executing our work correctly
  • Diamond metre marking, RCGC sample pick ups, remote RC exploration sampling, blast cone soil sampling, delineation exposure, Imago photography and blast cone map write ups
  • Ensuring procedures around the job are followed correctly and PPE are in place when conducting work
  • Assisting other departments within Geoscience and ensuring equipment maintenance is managed and housekeeping is up to standard. Assisting Drill and Blast , Mine Services and Geotechnical departments when needed.
  • Perform project closeout activities including collar cutting, collection of signage, removal of waste materials and assist in collar surveys and provide information for validation to the survey teams.
  • Involved as the teams BOS Champion with attendance of weekly meetings of improvements with supervisors, superintendents and department managers.
  • Elected Health and Safety representative and ensured a high level of safety and following of procedures on a daily basis. Ensuring weekly toolboxes were provided for team members. Monthly departmental safety meetings across all hubs.
  • Elected as my teams Peer Supporter.
  • Tasked with being a buddy for new starters and provided training throughout and for the team.

Laboratory Technician

  • I worked 2 years at the Government Department of Mining in the Geological Survey Sector
  • At the laboratory we study all our rock samples that are submitted and determine the best preparation course suitable for the rock
  • We look at grain sizes and patterns to ensure no damage is done to the minerals in the rock
  • My role in the laboratory consists of preparing samples in groups of their rock type with ensuring a high level of cleanliness to minimize cross contamination
  • I was responsible for Geochemistry and Geochronology preparation
  • Geochemistry consisted of crushing, archiving samples and data entry
  • Geochronology consisted of sawing, washing, drying, milling, splitting and the elutriation of samples
  • I have experience with a FRANS Magnetic Separation machine, picking zircons under microscopes as well as understanding a petrographic microscope
  • I am also familiar with mounting and polishing zircon samples along with performing Heavy Mineral Separation with the use of liquid polytungstate.

  • My duties when I started at SGS consisted of splitting oversized samples, sorting samples in the required numerical order, weighing the samples and entering the data into databases, boyd crush samples as well as jaw crush samples
  • I also worked in the balance room which consisted of preparing powdered samples for Fire Assay as well as entering the data correctly and ensuring the samples do not get mixed up
  • I also underwent full AAS gold digestion training as well as XRF testing.

Boarding House Supervisor

  • My role consisted living in the boarding house and remain on shift overnight in case of any emergencies with any boarders
  • Every morning a wake up of all the boarders would take place and ensure they attend school on time
