Leadership Experience:

The Deputy Principal serves on the College Leadership Team and assumes the Principal's responsibilities in her absence. Over a period of nine years and serving with three principals the role continues to evolve to answer School needs.

The Deputy Principal provides key input to the school's strategic and operational plans , which uses data to inform decision making across all aspects of the school.

Engagement at a governance level occurs through the active membership of two significant Board Sub-Committees: Finance and Governance and Risk. These committees meet prior to Board meetings to assess the school's position across these key areas.

Direct leadership and management of key school teams in the areas of Operations, Sports Department, IT Department, Library and Information Services, Health Care Centre, GAP program/ Year 13 employees, Reception and most recently Global Citizenship.

Human resource strategy and direction involves:

  • Working closely with the People and Culture Manager; Chairing employment panels across the school including the shortlisting, interviews and recommendations for appointment of staff;
  • The induction of new Principals to the school and the mentoring and support of new members of the Leadership Team.
  • Staffing of the Senior School timetable, including the effective allocation of cross campus staff.
  • Induction of new staff and effective management of staff performance.
  • Reporting to the School Board regarding the strategic direction of this area has been a requirement.

Leadership of Teaching and Learning includes:

  • Mentoring of early career teachers and those new to promotional positions.
  • Mentoring of teachers new to the profession through the NESA accreditation process for teacher proficiency. and the preparation of teachers working towards the ISTAA Experienced Teacher classification.
  • Oversight of the professional learning of staff throughout the whole school. This involves the assessment of individual applications in relation to strategic direction, and the management of the school budget. Through this lens, the Deputy Principal is engaged with the drive for school improvement through teaching and learning outcomes.

Risk and Compliance Leadership includes:

  • Responsibility for NESA compliance so as to maintain Registration and Accreditation current for the school. The complexity of this school's offering – CRICOS, Boarding, Primary and Early Learning makes this an extensive area of responsibility.
  • Coordination of the Annual Report to the Community.
  • Role of Child Safety Officer
  • Active membership of the WHS Committee.

Collaboration with key stakeholders:

  • Chairing the School Operations Committee
  • Construction and maintenance of a workable school calendar
  • The Deputy Principal interacts with students and parents across the whole school and is present at all school events .
  • Working with students in the operation of regular Senior School assemblies and major events such as the annual Sacred Heart Feast Day. and Vale celebrations.
  • The oversight of international students within the school in terms of their welfare and the management of CRICOS compliance
  • Engagement with the alumnae associations and the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart.

Enrolment Strategy and the interview and onboarding of new students, both domestic and international and the marketing of the school through functions and displays.

Effective crisis management is an important part of the role. The ability to communicate effectively to key stakeholders in the community and to logistically adapt, quickly and successfully, have been important responsibilities.

Leadership Experience

  • Member of the College Leadership Team who deputised for the Principal when absent.

  • Leadership of the College's Professional Development. In this context, the Assistant Principal interacted with the College Board by being an active member of the Human Resources, Risk and Compliance sub-committee.
  • Matters of compliance within the College. Completion of the Commonwealth Government census documents and the Commonwealth Government attendance return. Worked with the Principal to complete the and deliver College's Annual Report to the Community and the Annual Report to College Members
  • Management of whole school events – assemblies and school gatherings and the movement of the whole school offsite
  • .This role worked closely with the student leadership team in terms of listening to student feedback regarding College activities and events.

This leadership program was conducted by the AIS leadership centre and consisted of 10 days face-to-face instruction over a period of nine months. Input to the program came from a series of academics including: Professors Andy Hargreaves, Viviane Robinson and Patrick Duigan. Key features of the program included: professional companioning; a 360-degree leadership profile; visits to schools; professional reading and the implementation of a school-wide change project. It blended leadership theory and practice across four content areas: contextual leadership, instructional leadership, relational leadership and organisational leadership. All material was mapped against the elements of the National Standards for Principals. Successful completion gave 2 credit units in the Masters of Educational Leadership at the UNSW.
