Collections Support Officer

Queensland Museum

My current role is to support and assist with the delivery and completion of the Mould Remediation Project. Key Duties include;

  • Cleaning and rehousing of a variety of objects including archaeological material, Mineral and Fossil Specimens and objects from the Cultures and History department
  • Assisting with regular mould testing and observation of environmental conditions
  • Creating custom boxes and cradles following standard conservation guidelines and practices
  • Utilising our Collections Management System, Vernon, to search for objects/specimens and updating information
  • Record and document keeping - such as scanning and boxing of archival labels
  • Identify inconsistencies regarding object registration and assisting Senior Collection managers in rectifying that information
  • Employed proven problem-solving techniques to resolve issues quickly and with minimal disruption
  • Streamlined processes to maximize operational results.
  • Balanced multiple priorities effectively by utilizing strong organizational skills and proactive task management techniques

  • Unpacking of artefacts and sorting into categories
  • Assessment of Artefacts: Condition reporting
  • Provide superficial cleaning as required
  • Photograph artefacts with scale and registration number
  • Research provenance of objects and artworks
  • Undertake significance assessments (both small objects and artworks)
  • In case of deaccession, research relevant institutions that may be more appropriate
  • Registration duties: QMM currently does not have a digital database
  • Different systems of recording artefacts have been applied and in different formats over the years
  • The task is to compile all that information into one document to be placed in a digital database in the future
  • Tasks include:
  • Re-filing artefact data sheets
  • Gathering all existing documentation of objects from register books, acquisition forms and spreadsheets
  • Putting registration numbers onto artefacts
  • Providing artefacts with a new registration number of one cannot be found
  • Enter all data thereof into a hardcopy data file (aka excel spreadsheet)
  • File the data chronologically according to registration number
  • Ensure documentation and processes are in line with modern day museum practices and guidelines
