Tradesmen Fitter Machinist

Progress Rail, Kooragang, NSW

employed at the progress rail facility, Kooragang, as a tradesmen fitter machinist. In this role I am required to to carry out both major mechanical and minor Electrical repairs. these tasks are:

- Undertake scheduled servicing on 81, 82, 90, and TT class locomotives

- Undertake scheduled component change outs in CCO and ICC programs

- Live DIesel engine diagnoses and repair, Replacing major Emd Equipment such as Engines, Turbos, Camshafts, Power assemblies.

- Repair and replace Generalized locomotive Equipment, such as carbody and bogie equipment where required i.e. compressors, draft gear, Traction motors.

- Perform minor Electrical troubleshooting and component replacement.

- Perform on the go maintenance and repairs within a live running environment at customer facilities and infield work.

- Fault find and repair, pneumatic brake circuits, these include Fastbrakeand 30cw.

- Operate rolling stock withing the confines of the working yard where required.

- Read and identify parts and dimensions from technical drawings and service manuals.

- Complete appropriate recordings of maintenance repairs.

Employment at the Cardiff rail facility in the 5000/6000 class overhaul program consisted of the following work tasks

• Install and alignment of major components using precision measuring equipment in accordance to Manufacturer specifications.
• Troubleshooting underlying faults that hinder the operation of locomotive after overhaul.
• interpret pneumatics and basic wiring diagrams
• Major component changeout in accordance to Requirement of Customer
• Perform infield work in off site locations within a given time frame
• Locomotive commissioning and inbound/outbound testing
• perform locomotive servicing (3000 mile)
• Liaise with 3rd party manufacturers and give feed back on component modifications.
• Perform basic welding and fabrication

Prior to my commencement withing the 5000/6000 class overhaul i worked at the progress rail cardiff facility in the Traction motor Overhaul shop, the following tasks were completed.

• Disassemble and clean traction motors in accordance to a scheduled overhaul or component failure.
• Use precision measuring equipment to identify out of tolerance components. (external & internal micrometers, feeler gauges, dial bore gauges, thread gauges, bore spiders).
• Machine and undercut Armature commutators using basic lathe processes.
• Balance rotating equipment.
• Traction motor re-assembly using precision fitting equipment such as bearing heaters, hydraulic press, dial indicators.
• component Paint (internal and external)

2nd-4th year apprentice fitter machinist completed at the Downer rail (progress rail) facility at Kooragang. my duties completed are,

• Perform routine site maintenance and cleaning.
• Undertake scheduled servicing on 82, 90, and gt46 ace locomotives
• Perform onboard diagnostics on equipment during inbound/outbound testing and unscheduled breakdowns.
• transpose onboard faults log into service schedules.
• diagnose and repair of mechanical and electrical components.
• Identify components in parts manual or engineered drawings.
• Perform basic weld repair on exhaust components.
• Provision locomotive with fluids and sand.
• Life extension of 2 stroke EMD Engines
• Installation And Alignment of Main generators and Compressors.

Downer Rail School based traineeship completed between year 10 and year 12 at high School.

The duties undertaken during the traineeship were as followed:

• Scrub, Scrape, or spray machine parts, Equipment, and vehicles using scrapers, brushes, cleaners, acids, and abrasives.
• Utilize basic hand tools.
• Clean, lubricate, and adjust equipment.
• Test installed systems such as pipework fo leakage using Druck Gauges.
• Perform routine mechanical servicing on various locomotives for (CFCLA, Qube, SSR)

All of these tasks were completed under tradesmen supervision.
