Placement Areas: Perioperative, Oncology, Medical & Surgical and Palliative Care

Main Roles/ Accomplishments:

  • Recording vital signs including blood pressure, oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiratory rate andblood sugar level, and reporting any deviations.
  • Assisting staff in the areas of SAU, anaesthetics and scrub/scout, while enhancing my skills andknowledge of perioperative nursing.
  • Performing basic scouting duties in the theatre (with supervision), as per the ACORN Standards.
  • Assisting the anaesthetic nurse and anaesthetist in the operating theatre, learning about thedrugs of anaesthesia as well as different types of airway devices, cannulation, intubation,extubating and the role of the anaesthetic nurse pre-, intra- and post-operatively.
  • Wound care and management including dressing changes and updating care plans.
  • Medication administration (including oral, SC, IM and IV).
  • Performing 12 Lead ECG, recording data and reporting any deviations from normal.
  • Performing holistic head-to-toe assessments on patients, maintaining their dignitythroughout.
  • Identifying deviations from normal and responding and evaluating effectively totreat/manage and monitor progress & formulate a care plan.
  • Developing good rapport with both patients & colleagues and communicating well with thosefrom different socio-cultural backgrounds.
  • Assisting the Registered Nurse in the provision and coordination of person-centred care.
