In my time working for The Department of Education I have worn many hats. I have worked casually as a School Administration Officer (SAO) and as a Student Learning Support Officer (SLSO). In my current role for the department I work as an Aboriginal Education Officer, I strive to help Aboriginal students build upon their knowledge of culture, whilst understanding the complex and unique needs of each Aboriginal student. My own knowledge of Aboriginal culture and communities assists me to connect with Aboriginal students, their families. My effective communication skills allow me to work in partnership with stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes for Aboriginal students and their families.

In my main/current role I liaise with stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes for Aboriginal students. I create cultural programs that align with the NSW syllabus and implement these programs through cultural groups with the students. This includes creating and implementing a Dharug language program. I organise incursions and excursions that build upon cultural knowledge and have created my own incursion programs. I facilitate ‘Breakfast Club’ for the students four days a week. I collaborate with teachers, the executive team and parents to help manage the behaviors of my students. I collaborate with school staff on ‘Individual Behaviour Support’ plans, ‘Personalised Learning Pathways’ plans, and IEP plans. I have created and facilitated professional learning on Yarn circles and Acknowledgement of Country for the whole school staff. Through this we have created a school Acknowledgement of Country in consultation with our school community and local AECG. I have created and implemented wellbeing initiatives and community programs like our ‘Yarn Up’s’ and ‘Yarn over tea’ which are for our Aboriginal school community to go over Aboriginal education within the school and to create greater partnerships. I have spent considerable time in our Diverse Learning Centre, helping to support Aboriginal students with disabilities, in their daily routine and classroom activities. I work in close partnership with my principal to ensure the Aboriginal Education Policy is being adhered to, this has meant negotiating flexible school arrangements for my students to decrease suspensions. I have used data from suspensions to monitor and implement different measures to decrease our suspension rate. I have utilised data from the ‘Tell Them From Me; Survey to source and help deliver professional learning for staff to increase staff knowledge in Aboriginal culture and confidence in supporting Aboriginal students. I liaise with stakeholders such as Da Murrytoola and Yarramundi AECG, DCJ, Barnardos and local community organisation’s such as Merana Aboriginal Association and Peppercorn. I am a delegate for Met West Regional Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and am a member of the Da Murrytoola AECG where I facilitate term meetings for the Aboriginal Education Officers. I am a member of the Yarramundi Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.
I have worked casually as a SAO. The duties involved were answering phone calls, answering and forwarding emails, signing students in and out of school, medication application, sorting and filing, orders, printing and faxing and cash handling. I have knowledge of URN, SAP, SchoolBytes and Edbuy.
I have worked casually as a SLSO across K-6 and in our Diverse Learning Centre (previously known as Support Unit). Duties involved were assisting and supporting students with learning tasks, supporting students with transitions, supporting students by following IEP and behaviour plans, small group programs, playground duties, preparing and distributing resources and marking homework.
