Summary

I have been a qualified children's nurse for 9 years and am passionate about the care I give. I enjoy working at a fast pace and being busy, therefore will look to help others where possible and where needed. I am able to work as part of the multidisciplinary team and feel it is important to communicate effectively with health professionals for a timely and smooth admission and discharge. When working on the ward i was really able to implement 'child centred and family centred care', i am quite passionate about using these models to care for my patients as feel it provides a better care experience for the patient and family. My main goal when transferring to the ward was to complete the high dependancy course. I completed this course through bristol royal hospital for children in march 2021. Since completing the course I often found myself working in the HDU, often looking after up to x3 patients requiring closing monitoring and nursing care. I enjoyed this type of nursing as it kept me busy and was continuously expanding my knowledge. During my time I was able to improve my leadership skills. I did this by taking charge of shifts and working alongside nursing students. I received positive feedback from work colleagues and students, which made me feel more confident with my leadership skills. Over the past two years have been working on the casual pool at Sydney Children’s Hospital, this has been working well for me as I embrace and enjoy change, working on the casual pool means I can work in a variety of areas, constantly challenging myself. I can easily adapt my skills in order to work well in the given area. Throughout my nursing career i have always worked in demanding and stressful environments. This has allowed me to develop effective and excellent time management skills. I feel it is not only important to manage your own tasks but to also be aware of your colleagues around you, ensuring that help is given where needed. Since resisting in Australia I have also completed two rural contracts, one in Alice springs and another in Canberra. This has allowed me to learn more in depth about new cultures and nursing in rural Australia. I am keen to continue to have new experiences within my nursing role and am excited for new opportunities.

Paediatric Nurse - Emergency Department

Torbay and South Devon Foundation Trust
02.2019 - 09.2020
  • Working in the Emergency Department at Torbay Hospital is often an exciting and challenging environment
  • Daily duties often require being very proactive, as the paediatric nurse we are required to co-ordinate the paediatric department and have to care for all the medically unwell children who come into the department, quite often with minimal support
  • I am often required to make decisions on what treatment or investigations a child may require and implement these before they are seen by a doctor, this often makes for a quick flowing admission
  • Safeguarding children who attend the ED is paramount, we are often faced with challenging scenarios where children have attended after experiencing a non-accidental injury and we have to recognise this quickly and escalate as required, working closely with the multi-disciplinary team
  • At any time during the shift we could be called away from the department to attend a paediatric resus calls for children who are acutely unwell or have been involved in a trauma

Children's Nurse

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children
10.2016 - 02.2019
  • Working on a general medical ward enabled me to successfully develop my skills and experience by caring for children with a range of conditions
  • Due to the high demand and fast pace of working on a general medical ward, I was able to gain excellent time keeping skills, which I have carried over with me, ensuring I am able to manage my workload and can easily recognise what jobs need to be prioritised
  • I have recently been working on delegating care, which I feel I have improved by working with nursing assistants and newly qualified nurses
  • During my time at Bristol Children’s Hospital I had the opportunity to partake in a four month rotational post, which included working on a neuroscience ward and cardiology ward
  • This opportunity has given me specialist knowledge of caring for children with cardiac and neurological conditions and has given me a good insight to working within a specialised multidisciplinary team
  • I enjoy being put out of my comfort zone and being challenged in my job, and am always looking for opportunities to widen my knowledge
