As RN at the bedside, I:

  • Provide exceptional care to high-acuity patients needing complex therapies, such as ventilator management, renal replacement therapies, cardiac monitoring, surgical and medical interventions.
  • Provide kindness, compassion and understanding to patients, their families/visitors at all times, and when required enacting security measures for the safety of staff, patients and visitors.
  • Ensure dignity and respect is given to the dying patient in circumstances of palliation.

  • Maintain surveillance to quickly assess patients and deliver appropriate treatment while managing rapidly changing conditions - often to assist colleagues in the roles of ACCESS nurse within ICU and during MET/Code Blue situations as the Intensive Care Outreach Nurse.
  • Report emergent changes and collaborate with the ICU/Ward Team Leader and Treating Medical Team immediately for direction and assistance of rapidly changing situations, in both the ICU and ward areas.
  • Provide skilled, timely and level-headed emergency response to the changing needs of the critically-ill patient.
  • Ensure documentation is maintained and timely
  • Using first-hand knowledge and clinical expertise to advocate for patients and enact prescribed treatment strategies.
  • Assist with staff allocation, TrendCare and oversee the unit when the Team Leader is on meal break.
  • Support colleagues, novices and student at the bedside as both the primary care nurse, ACCESS nurse and ICON to facilitate planned and opportunistic educational opportunities.
