Textile Technologist - Research and Development

  • From start to finish, provide fabric technical support outcomes to all departments (Business/Sales/ Design/ Operations-Production/Research & Development) with workwear contracts and developments for Fire and Emergency (including Structural and Wildlands), Electrical Utilities, Industrial, Corporate and Defence
  • To assist the Research & Technologies Department in the preparation of samples, the conduct of testing and certification of materials and products
  • To prepare correspondence and other documentation relating to testing and certification, and to maintain relevant records
  • To assist with the sourcing of information and materials for new product development
  • To manage the coordination of fabric testing for Request for Tender (RFT) process, for awarded contracts and for through-life batch testing of contracts typically presented in a Verification & Validation Matrix
  • To conduct fabric property testing to known standards, and to maintain relevant records
  • General Testing: Determine testing and certification from standards and specification requirements
  • Obtain quotations for testing, prepare sample materials for testing, prepare testing and certification documentation, monitor testing and certification, maintain test database and matrixes
  • New Product Sourcing: To source materials fit for purpose meeting specifications and standards, obtaining competitive information on prices and samples, and maintain relevant records
  • Verification Matrixes for Tenders, Quotation and Contracts: Compiling and coordinating range of current test reports as required by the RFT, analyzing results and presenting in a format for submission with tender response
  • Provide general advice to Sales & Marketing for incorporation into tender content as necessary
  • Preparation of fabric swatches and sample trims as required by the RFT in a format for presentation with the tender response
  • Accessing test reports that are on file or arranging new testing to tender performance specifications for fabric, trims & garment construction
  • Analyzing results against the RFT specifications and completing the V&V section of the RFT
  • Contract Specifications: Compiling and coordinating a range of applicable test reports as required by the contract, preparation of fabric swatches and trims, and presenting a Technical Data Pack (TDP) for submission with the PPS (pre-production sample)
  • Arranging through-Contract batch integrity testing at NATA accredited laboratories or accredited offshore testing laboratories as required by the contract and presenting in a format for submission to DMO
  • Maintaining batch test data for each Contract
  • ADF specifications: Manage the Wet Weather contract, preparing submissions for changes to specifications and preparation of Application for Deviation

  • Working to a critical path from order placement through to production & responsible for ensuring all fabrics/trims have sufficient tests & are exported within deadline
  • Ensuring base/bulk/trim tests are actioned within deadlines (working with both UK labs & fabric suppliers directly), discuss concerns with relevant team members, submitting to the customer in required format & ensure approvals received prior to cutting

  • Provide technical support and direction on all fabric, trims and component requirements for private label accounts (M&S, Debenhams, BHS, John Lewis & Hunkemoller), identify and develop innovative new products that meet customer expectations in performance, functionality and costs
