Why I chose to study Engineering.
My Hope…
Growing up I witnessed the painful scenes of dementia within my family. Both of my grandmothers on my mother’s and father’s side suffered from severe forms of the disease. I watched as they slowly lost not just their memories but their ability to do the most basic things in life. They forgot how to use the toilet, they would be found playing with their faeces and when they were asked why, they would reply saying they did not know why, they did not know how to ask for help and how to look after themselves. Sometimes they would get hold of car keys and try to drive not understanding how dangerous that was. They would recall old memories like they were in their 40s and would demand that they have to go to their offices for work. These experiences deeply affected me. I felt helpless but I also knew I did not want to just accept things the way they were. It made me want to find a way to help old people thinking I definitely do not want to see my parents become like that. That’s when I started thinking about engineering not just as a career but as a way to make a real difference. I want to study Mechatronic Engineering so I can design a smart chip or device that supports people living with dementia. My idea is not to try and bring back lost memories but to help them keep doing the everyday things that make life manageable and dignified. Something wearable or implantable that gives reminders or support with things like using the bathroom, bathing, recognising pain, asking for help or even avoiding dangerous situations. I want to create something that helps people keep their independence for as long as possible. For me engineering is not only about machines or technology it’s about people. It’s about solving problems that matter. I believe we can use technology to bring comfort, safety and dignity to those who need it most. My grandmothers’ struggles inspired me and I carry that with me every day. A scholarship would help me focus fully on my studies without worrying about financial stress. It would be a big step towards achieving my goal of developing real solutions for people with dementia, that can improve old aged lives and honour the memory of my grandmother. I can work part time for UNSW College to help with some of the fees. Thank you for reading my statement and considering my application.
